So apparently it's a case of too little, too late.

He's told me that he's had a fling "that has an emotional spark" and that he wants to explore to see if he can be happier with someone else.

Sorry to hear that, but on the positive side, if he's already cheated on you, then you are better off without him. I know that doesn't ease the pain you are feeling right now, but in the end you might be better off.
