Public magicians use the method of "hiding in plain sight" for a lot of their mechanical devices.
They blend them in to the background, or make them look like a part of the scenery, or make them look like trashcans, newspaper stands, suitcases, baby strollers, or something that is typically ignored by people on the street.
In this case, he had several people in on this illusion, some to hide the box, some to hide the mechanism lifting him, and others to "misdirect" the crowds line of vision.
The actual piece he was standing on was obviously of a clear material that did not reflect light, but blended in with the "air", so it looked like he was not standing on anything.
The support device(s) he used in this illusion is also the same ones he uses when "bending" over backwards on one foot. The device supports his body, along with the special shoes he wears....so when he bends backwards, it looks like one foot is all that supports him and he isnt falling over.
If you look closely, there is a guy in a black Tshirt with a camera that stands right up next to him the whole time, and another guy behind him...they are hiding this "box". As he starts to rise, some people start pointing their cameras "up" and start pointing "up", as to get everybody else in the crowd to look up, so they dont notice anything going on below.
You will notice that the camera never shows anything below the bottom of his shoes, until such time they WANT you to see him "floating", where the other people are in place, as to hide anything that might show from that angle.
