Any body work in healthcare or public service?

I'm just curious if anyone else works in the health care field or works public service. I.e. Hospital, teacher, law enforcement etc.

I work for a county based ambulance service and love it. Anyone else a public servant or in healthcare as well?

I want to get into being a Certified Nurses Assistant.. I got my cert and
everything, but it seems like no one wants to hire a newbie here in my area. I've
been on a job hunt since last Nov..

I'm almost about ready to throw in the towel and give up on trying to find a
job in it and just find a random job, just cause I've been unemployed for a really long
time and I need some type of income coming in.

It seems that people would rather keep their old un-updated staff and give poor
care than to 'risk' hiring a newbie..

My brother is a medical assistant in a pediatrician's private practice. He works with kids 40-50 hours a week. He's hoping to get into med school to become a PA in the next couple years.

Where have you been looking?
You might try nursing homes, retirement homes, assisted living residences and emergency clinics. Sometimes you have to start at the "bottom" and work your way up. These places are usually in need of any kind of medically trained people.

Hell, if I was rich, you could be my personal nurse!!!!

I was recently introduced to the idea of "shadowing".
This is where you go in person, and talk to the head of the HR department of where you want a job. You tell them you have been licensed and are ready for work, but you understand you are a "newbie", and you would like to "shadow" a RN for a week, and volunteer your help if the RN needs it.

This way, you not only get your face in their face, you show them what you are capable of, and you are willing to go beyond the usual steps in order to prove yourself and hopefully get a paying position.

If it you don't end up getting hired right away, then at least they KNOW you now...and could be the next person they hire. Whether that be next week or in three months.

You might also look at emergency room positions. Especially the ones for 3rd shift.
I see a lot of those.

What about the school you went too? Don't they have a placement counselor?

And just to get your foot in the door..............
you might try a position like this -

Probably not what you really want, but if you can get some kind of entry position in a hospital, you can apply for internal positions for what you do want.

I've placed app's for home care agencies, nursing homes, hospitals
and rehab facilities.

I interview well but I either get no call backs or HR would call me back and
tell me that they don't really want to hire a person who has no experience.

I've inquired about shadowing but no one has gotten back to me about it or
they tell me that they don't really do that sort of thing.

All the positions that I've applied for are for pretty much Per-Diem/Part time or
for shifts that nobody else wants [i.e. nights, evenings, weekends]. I don't even
care about the pay-rate, I just need it to get experience.

I got my cert at the American Red Cross and they have someone who handles
everyones progress and aid people finding work, but they've given me the same
resources that I've already exhausted.

They've also told me that these are entry level position jobs and they don't
'understand' why people won't hire me due to lack of experience. Well, it's
what companies have told me. What do you say to that, lol?

I've worked at homes before as a Dietary Aide, and I kind of know how these people
work and how they treat a new person. They pretty much treat them like shit and test
your mettle and see how far you can take it, so I know what I'm getting myself into. I
also know that most places give crap care and they don't want to have to 'adjust' to
the new person who is doing what their suppose to and makes them look bad.

I will keep on trying though, but if nothing develops by the end of the month. I'm
gonna start putting in apps for random jobs cause it's already almost April and I can't
keep on staying like this.

I start a coop next year in which I'll be placed in a nursing home, after which I can work as a PSW as part of my nursing program...I've also volunteered for the local hospital which was enjoyable.

I have heard PSWs are horrible to work with from trainee nurses, horrible people from family of people in nursing homes, and that the job itself sucks.

So I'm going to do my best to be my best; in my opinion a PSW that doesn't care is going to hate the job, displease family, and treat people below them like shit. So I'll treat it like a challenge, if I hate it no matter how hard I try I know it's not my end goal.

I am excited for it.

I typed something but it didn't go through. Pretty much trying to see if I can get my
feet wet somehow.. Kind of having a bit of anxiety about it cause of money issues and
the fact that if I don't get my hours in of experience and my license expires I'd have to
take the whole cert again, albeit it's not for another couple of years..
