Do you think a homophobic but decent parent is acceptable?

I so agree with this. I have never thought of being a parent as a right we're born with. Unfortunately, the majority of humans think this way. And that's why abuse is so common. It's sick. People don't treat a life as precious as it really is.

I had parents that had no problem with me being gay, but I think most people that do probably cut their parents a little more slack than you would a friend who you chose to bring into your life and can just as easily choose to remove from your life. In this case, however, it is not just a parent saying he doesn't agree with being gay or thinking it is just a phase his son is going through. This is a man who says, " ''If you are gay, get out of the house. There'll be no father and son anymore.'' That's not a decent parent. That's a miserable failure of a parent.

No. A homophobic parent is NOT acceptable. Here's the reasons why.

Make a list of everything homophobes say in order to justify their hate towards gays.
Try as you might, you CANNOT put one thing on that list that is based completely in truth and facts. That's a nice way of saying they are full of "ShullBit." They have to make crap up to justify their hate and they are loosing every danged battle they get in over their crap. They are operating on superstitions, lies, more lies and some of the most idiotic mess ever to be spoken by humans to justify their own irrational hate.

The old gay guy I mentioned in the thread about Anita Bryant has a 40+ year old son and step-son (the son of his lover of something like 20 years.) THEY testified at that trial in Michigan about gay marriages and adoptions about how their gay dads were great! One of them is a pediatrician in Michigan, the other is an oil company exec.. both married with kids. The Michigan judge was so put out with the "evidence" the anti-gay people provided in court he wrote some nasty things about them in his decision. Here's a bit of it.

""The opinion goes on to dismiss the claims of state witness Mark Regnerus, a sociologist and author of a controversial study that found children of parents who had same-sex relationships were worse off. Friedman wrote that the "New Family Structures Study" is "flawed on its face." Regnerus was denounced by the University of Texas at Austin, where he is an associate professor, the same day that he testified in the Michigan trial. The Court finds Regnerus’s testimony entirely unbelievable and not worthy of serious consideration, the ruling states." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/03/21...85957.html

Parents owe it to their children to be informed and make decisions about their children based on factual information and not the complete lies and stupid nonsense spread by people who for some odd reason, almost all happen to be American fundamentalist christians.

Let's just consider the entire concept of "unconditional love" for a minute!!!!! What sort of sickness is involved to cause a parent to reject a child over an issue that has been proven by science to be determined randomly in the womb??

Now I have a VCR I have a way to play old gay movies from the 60s and 70s that can't be found anywhere. Last night I watched "Norman Is That You?" It's about a father (Redd Foxx of all people) finding out his son is gay. What did Redd do in the movie? He wandered around the streets thinking about it and then went to a bookstore and bought a stack of books on homosexuality and started reading so he'd understand. PERFECT!!!!!!!!! That movie needs to be shown to every homophobic parent in the world as a tutorial on how to deal with it.

Everyone needs to see that movie!!!! If you do make sure you have a ROOM FULL of gay people for the end to have its full funny effect. It's a great ending when Redd Foxx is walking out of the room saying, "one in six people is gay"...then he turns to the theater audience and starts counting people off, "one...two... three... four.. five... SIX!!!!! There's one! One...two.. three.. four..."

The movie has Waylon Flowers and Madam... I barely remember them. here's a trailer of it

Since it can lead to suicide and other problems, no I don't.

That's generally speaking. I was hurt when I told Granny I was a lesbian and she thought I'd been "damaged" by my upbringing, that had she fought harder to keep me that I wouldn't have become gay. She still loves me, and even then she accepted me, but she didn't think it was the normal way to be. That was acceptable IMO because the love and acceptance for me was still there even if she treated my sexuality as one would a mental disability. In no way did she menace, disown, or otherwise reject me, so I still had it better than many others.

one positive thing about my parents is they are the most tolerant, unbigoted, lefty-hippy types imaginable in terms of their views. Their rules growing up paraphrased were pretty much 'don't hurt yourself and don't hurt others, outside that do/be whatever you want and whoever you are'. I was scared to come out because I KNEW they'd be so accepting I thought it would be like WOO YOU CAME OUT *party poppers*....I was kinda relieved it was just like 'I'm gay'...'And....?', they are separated so I had to basically come out twice, although neither of them were exactly shocked (I've ALWAYS been very feminine)

CCRox Wrote:Hating haters is an interesting concept. Where's the decency in the hate?

Homophobia is about fear. Hatred is a secondary emotion designed to mask or protect from the truth of fear.

Ah you're that type of guy.. Sorry to burst your bubble there, but you failed when you labeled me as a hater and you failed when you tried to explain the difference between fear and hatred and where hatred comes from.

Calling someone scum doesn't mean I hate them. It means I'm calling them out for who they are. I have a cousin who's disgusted by gays, he is the type that when he sees two guys holding hands he will spit on the ground of disgust.. Guess what, in my eyes he is still scum but he is family and I still love him.

I suggest you educate yourself a bit more before you attack me about me and subjects you know obviously so little about. You insult me by trying to label me and you insult me with putting words in my mouth..

Ps: Just in case you think I hate you, I don't, you simply annoyed me.. Wink
