To be fair, I am semi well traveled and I tend to stick to more technical words when describing stuff. Furthermore, I refrain from the use of idiom and colorful metaphors in my day to day speech.
I have what is called a 'Media Accent'. The US main news outlets have worked real hard on creating an accent-less accent for news reporting to the nation. I picked that up as it allows me to pass through places without sticking out too much as a stranger.
Its actually a survival thing and based on the need to rapidly adapt and camouflage myself around people. I have hung out with too many people who are not the nicest of folk and who would target anyone too odd....
Take Soda/Coke/Pop/Fissy drink... I will use whatever is common for the area I am currently in. And I automatically exchange names depending on who I am talking to. If I am addressing someone from the UK, you can bet I refer to fizzy drinks, chips and other UK words.
