Sexual abstinence
#71
MisterLove Wrote:Abstinence is a virtue for the same reason that addiction is a vice.

And it's not just sex, food/gluttony is another example.

I had a grilled chicken salad 2 hours ago for lunch instead of a combo meal with fries.

Am I heroic?

Would someone please post a list with the phone numbers and photos of those rejected? I'd like to 'interview' them. Surely a number of them need comforting after the trauma.
I bid NO Trump!

I read that as: I'm abstaining from garlic

Asexual doesn't equal abstinence. Abstinence is a choice, i.e. I choose not to f*ck.

That's irrelevant, you're missing the point.

If you abstain from sex for whatever reason (religious, health, etc.) you will be frowned upon, mocked, etc. just like gay people were in the past (and still are today, in most countries). That's what I'm talking about here.

No no no wait up a sec here.

You make it sound like this thread was making fun of Buddhist monks or Franciscan monks or people in poor physical health for not getting any. That was not anyone's "point" so I don't see how anyone could be missing it. What you did was enter the discussion basically saying that anyone who is abstaining for any reason at all is exhibiting some kind of virtue of moral character. Obviously the unspoken implication there is that sex is a bad or immoral act by itself. The moral judgment around abstinence came from you first and it elicited a bunch of responses. This post comes off like pulling out a persecution card after the fact.

homosexual guys in the past were burned, physically tortured, and fined sums of money in addition to just being frowned upon and mocked, if you want to bring the past into this.

people who abstain from sex are hardly made the mockery of in the public scene. if anything, the popular opinion will throw in an accolade or two for their ''self-control''. some people see through that hypocrisy and yeah they don't exhibit a positive attitude towards abstinence, but you can hardly make a claim that abstinence from sex is comparable to the social stigma gay guys are/have been on the receiving end of. the two are not even remotely comparable.

and you are missing the point that attraction to men is not a choice i made. i didn't choose men over women to make a harder life for myself (and, by the way, my life is not harder) and make myself suffer (if anything i chose not to pretend and go with the easier life of being with women). if i and other gay guys had done that, then it would be fair to compare it to abstaining from sex, and your analogy would be closer.

Speaking of how you began this discussion, this was not what you were saying when you began this thread. Yes, you mentioned "shamelessness and hedonism." but neither one of those words is a substitute for the word "addiction." In fact, "shamelessness" is nothing more than your judgment call on other people. You are the one missing the point here and although you later said this had nothing to do with religion, having seen your many religious threads here, I'm not at all convinced of your assertion this has nothing to do with religion, because the basis for morality when looked at outside of religion is based on the principal of, does what you do and your actions unfairly bring harm to others and as said earlier, for something to be thought of as being virtuous, it has to contrast with something in your mind that is not virtuous. If I were to go out tonight and have sex with five different, consenting people, that would not bring you nor anyone else any harm, so the reason why you might find that immoral would have to be something other than actions that bring harm to others and I can't think of any other reason that could be other than something based on religion. (And please do not bring up sexually transmitted diseases as the harm on others here. That absolves each person of personal responsibility of their own actions in protecting themselves and the choices they make, and if someone received an std from a person that misled him about their std status, it was the deceit that was immoral, not the act of having sex.)
