That sounds suspiciously fatalistic. Just because you had a date with a toad doesn't mean they'll all be warty. Dating, even just being social, is a healthy part of living. A committed relationship isn't for everyone; some people do just dandy all on their own. If, however, you want a monogamous relationship keep trying. Giving up on the things you want in life can become a way of living and easily spread to other aspects of your life.

As for people who use their phones for ANYTHING while on a date, in a conversation, or whatever, they should be taken aside by a very strict great aunt and taught some manners. Just because we have cell phones and smart phones and things well past Dick Tracy's wrist radio does not mean they have to be in constant use. GET A GRIP, PEOPLE!

On a date or even a one on one outing with a friend, if you aren't expecting some kind of life-or-death call, proper politeness is that the ringer is off and the phone is in your pocket, imo. I've received negative flak for saying similar things online in the past but I consider that to be people reacting defensively to someone calling out bad behavior they engage in rather than a serious notion that it's polite to be endlessly staring at your phone and having your brain leak down into it through your thumbs while your words trail-off midsentence repeatedly.

Gosh, I'd be so pissed if I was you. Like what the hell? Am I not entertaining enough that you're looking for your next trick already?

Since Expat has self-deleted, I am taking a chance he will still see this.

Think of the positive of this. As we get to know someone and develop a relationship, some of our bad habits will over time appear. We all have them so there is no way around it. On a first date, however, we do our absolute best to be on our best behavior and show our best self, and if this horrible behavior was the best he had to offer, he is definitely not worth it. In a way, he did you a big favor by showing you from the start that he is a major jerk and stopped you from wasting your time and finding this out later.

When you're out for dinner with a bad date, don't order dessert and it will be over that much sooner.
