Yeah anytime someone calls me hun I'm looking for the nearest sword to kill them with but could be Canadian lingo.

I worked with a few guys over the years when I bartended who used the term "hun" a lot and I can think of a couple examples of each kind of usage...depends on the guy using them...

I was trying to think of the words I used on guys back then as a term of endearment....I think "babe" or "dude" were my big two....

Thing is...when you work in a gay bar you easily hug and kiss 200 or more guys hello or goodbye a night in a friendly sort of way (and one or two in another sort of way if you are lucky ) ...and a term of endearment goes with the hug usually...

It CAN be used with scorn, but it'd be odd to use it with scorn when paired with "good night".

I do not see nor will personally take that as a come on approach, or even the thought at it being disrespectful! then again that's just me! I work with a heterosexual co-worker who knows I am gay, and as we've gotten closer through the years of working together, we have grown very fond of each other, and never once has he ever harassed or disrespected me in any way!

thats how people talk. had this guy call me papi before but thats how they talk, its a friendly term .. depending on the person

I'm probably the only one but I'm more used to hun being used in a somewhat condescending or dismissive manner.

O... you are NOT the only one! There used to be someone in here in GS who was bad about that anytime someone said anything he disagreed with it. That's all I'll say about that. I won't even mention his name and give anyone else convulsions.

But with people that you're friendly and familiar with, it's usually not meant that way.

I don't think it means much, other than he recognises you as a friend and a gay one (one with whom he can adopt that familiarity, without it being misconstrued). You could call him 'hun' back. It's just a term of endearment. I have used it on this site when talking to other people I've taken a friendly interest in. It doesn't mean I have any ulterior motive than to be friendly and kind.
I'd also think it was a term that an older person could easily use towards someone younger, again as a term of endearment. It certainly has a less formal air than 'sir', doesn't it?
