Does anyone on here have experience of setting up their own business? If so would you be willing to share the pros/cons/ups/downs and any gems of advice?

Also anyone who feels able to offer career advice is very welcome.

Feeling a little lost right now with a number of possibilities leading in several different directions and could do with an outside P.O.V. I may detail further on the thread later but I don't have time right now (or TBH the inclination, feeling a little despondant, partly aggravated by PMT!! Sorry guys)

Theirs a nice place around my area which is supported by the government, supposed to give people information or starting their own businesses they get you intouch with mentors and all that.

I tried to start my own business but social skills killed it

I started working for myself about ten years ago after I was made redundant from a job in education.

At the suggestion of my bank I got in touch with Business Link in town and attended some seminars for people planning new business enterprises. I assume this link is to the London equivalent ...

I am fanatically unambitious and have just about managed to scrape a living over the years. Apart from earning a fraction of what I could have been earning in a proper job it was a good decision to have made

Another key factor penny is maybe save yourself 10k in cash... This should be easily done during the credit crunch thatway when the banks want to lend your be able to have some cash to fall back on should you have a bad period of trading.... I know if you take a 50k loan with the bank they want a repayment of around 1-1,500 pounds a month paid back to them... Least if you had 10k in savings whilst it takes off you know you got ten months to get established
