Sting's Musical "The Last Ship" to Close
#1
I was sad to see in the news this morning that Sting's semi-autobiographical musical The Last Ship, which debuted on Broadway this fall, will be closing due to insufficient ticket sales. We saw it in previews and really enjoyed it.

Set in Wallsend in Newcastle, the play is a stylization of the effect the closure of the Swan-Hunter shipyard had on the town. The score contains a few of Sting's prior recordings including "All This Time" plus new compositions.

Sting joined the cast in December in an effort to boost attention for the show.

Unsurprised.

After listening to the CD, why he ever thought it would be remotely interesting to anyone on this side of the Atlantic boggles the mind.

...and then Sting picked up the lute.

I saw it in previews and enjoyed it, but I think you are right that it's a niche audience. Although, Billy Elliott....

Did you listen to his concept album or have they released a cast recording? I thought the former did not capture the energy of the live show.

I liked his segment at The Kennedy Center Honors last week....I didn't
really expect to like it as much as I did.
