LOOKING on HBO
#61
East Wrote:Hmmmm...this is like musical chairs for me....

Now my favorites are Lynn and Richie

With Lynn...I LOVE that he is honest....I totally get what he is saying. I know for me...if I ever lose my lover...I have nothing left to really give anyone. He will always be my true love and no one can even hold a candle to him for me and not because there is anything wrong with anyone else...they just will never be able to take his place...and I would be blunt and honest about it like Lynn was...and I wouldn't let anyone else invest their energy into me because it would be very unfair to them. I liked it because you never really hear anyone talking about that and it is exactly how I feel as well....

Patrick and Kevin ...UGH for both of them. One thing I could never do is go out with someone who is with another guy and going behind his back... or even have sex with them...never did it KNOWINGLY my entire life (and I was quite a slut once upon a time)...I was just an ethical slut LOL. There were a few times I did it unknowingly...and I was pissed off and definitely never did it again. I can't help but put myself in the other guys place.

I am glad Richie has moved on...he is too good for Patrick.

The thing he said about waiting in line is SF for Ice Cream and other crap...LOL...SO TRUE! I never understand it.

I think the writing is getting better....
... except that you'll see no two episodes seem to have been written by the same person, so depending on the story line and the writer, the stories will appeal more or less.
What did Richie say about waiting in line for Ice Cream in San Francisco?

I'm loving this show... I'm kinda getting a TV crush on Johnathan, even if I don't agree with his bouncing between the two guys. I think Richie is adorable too! My BF hates the Russel Tovey character because he's being such a cad to his (now Ex) BF. LOL

Yeah..very true. Last week was dreadful....hated it. I kept trying to figure out what they were trying to accomplish...or maybe their writers never meet each other and/or share any notes? it was really bad IMO....

The lines in SF...LOL...it really is a "thing"...

Supposedly...a line indicates something that is worth the wait and you will find Bay Area people falling in line for this a lot. I am not one of them though EXCEPT if I already know that whatever it is I am waiting for is worth it. I will gladly stand in the long line for my favorite falafel....

I have to agree with you, @East, I didn't like that party episode very much, except that it set Patrick (Jonathan) in a very awkward situation where he couldn't enjoy his party, and it was supposed to show that getting drunk - because feeling sorry for yourself - can make you let the cat out of the bag if your mates are not around watching out for you. While the situation is quite a realistic one, I didn't think the writing was very genuine, to be honest, and didn't like that episode, thinking they were still LOOKING for whatever it was their message was supposed to be. It was a weak episode, in truth, but then it did show such fragilities as Patrick's (definitely undecided) character might have. He doesn't really want to decide anything for himself and is quite happy to be thrown into a situation and then have to deal with it, but he doesn't always do well with the head-on taking of decisions for himself. A bit wishy- washy, maybe? But also trying to get some more experience where experience is lacking, and tackling the difficulties of wanting to be in love while taking into account the "baggage" that his boyfriends have and bring to the relationships. He could be a less interesting character if he were the one who's smooth and falls in love with someone who can be fallen in love with (i. e. unattached). No, this double-dating situation makes him have to deal with all of his preconceptions of what a relationship should be. Let's say that he does have some morals, but they are tossed about on the ocean of complicated love stories and relationships that are difficult to handle smoothly and effectively. In the meantime, he's not even sure that his relationship IS a relationship, per se, and he's probably wondering whether he shouldn't just chalk these up to fuck-buddy relationships, or just opportunities to experience male on male sex (also known as just "having-no-strings-attached sex").

We can understand that Dom has been happily indulging in NSA sex up to now, it's been part of his lifestyle. Patrick has not had that yearning, but the clock is ticking for him too and he knows that getting older will also mean he'll have fewer opportunities to score, but scoring is not his game, from the start. He's basically romantic, and is looking for that kind of relationship. Dom's at that point in his life where he's realised the vacuity of NSA sex encounters and is now craving that something else in terms of relationships... building something together, which Lynn thinks he might not be able to provide with the same depth as with his previous deceased partner.

Basically LOOKING is really about being tossed about in this new world of relationships where (finally) men who love men, are allowed NOT to be forever condemned to one-night stands and non fulfilling relationships. For some this is quite a new notion. They are all looking (seeking) for that elusive happiness (the one promised in the American Constitution) while still trying to define just what that happiness might be. Dom wants a restaurant outlet, he's about to get it. Patrick wants a stable relationship, but he'll have to come to a decision about who with. Agustín has been a mess, so far, but he's about to become something else while re-orienting his energies. Maybe he shouldn't try to be a painter, and he'll be a better counsellor for young LGBT kids thrown out of their homes.

With reference to what Russell Tovey is quoted to have said, I'm wondering whether his words haven't been deformed. I'm not trying to give him a pass card, but I'm thinking that what he probably meant was that he was lucky not to turn out as the totally effeminate type of gay in the social context in which he lived. Being effeminate in his social surroundings might have put him at much more considerable risk of being gay-bashed, or bullied by his rough-er mates (in a rough-er) social context. I suspect that is what he meant, maybe not that he dislikes effeminate gays, or gays who show those traits. It's a defense mechanism, but that's how he was brought up. I think you'll understand that he's been more sensitive than you'd admit to the hypothetical fact that had he been more effeminate, (and this might have happened, he says, had he been more molly-coddled) life would have been much harder for him. I don't think it's fair to call him homophobic because he's stated that not being overly effeminate has kept him safe. I don't think he's condoning rough treatment for those who are effeminate. I think he's looking at this as something that kept ostracism away for him. So has he been faking it all these years? This is where nurture takes over from nature.
If I'm wrong, then feel free to dislike him.

I will never understand why some people think that if they go out with a guy who is already in a relationship and they leave the guy they are with to be with them...well...you have NOT won a prize. If a guy is deceptive...it is NOT the "other person's fault"....

....the worst part...they are genuinely surprised..and enraged..when they do the same thing to them....and who wants to be the messenger who gets shot because they point out the truth to them....(raises hand...I'll do it)

...and then they show up and announce they are fucking to their co-workers...bad idea....

One nice thing...remembering that "moment" when you say "I love you"...and you hear "I love you" ...it is such a big deal when it happens and it is better than any drug...

Poor Richie....I think he is still in love with Patrick....

The gay gaymers thing...awkward...but probably realistic...

Augustin and the AIDS scare...honest dialogue...I don't think anyone automatically can "handle it" without some difficulty along the way...
