Actually technically the longest word is a formula containing some 1913 characters, describing some stupidly complex scientific concept about which i niether know nor care a great deal.

Also on another technicality you could claim that pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovalcanakoniosis is the longest English word, but that's been disputed as it is a constructed word.

The official longest word in the English lanugage is actually floccinaucinihilipilification, which stands at 29 letters.

I did a talk on this in 6th year english and have many more long word facts i can recite at leisure but i think i'll stop here lest i bore you all to suicide instead of just tears.
