What's up with that?
Sometimes I worry that those machines in my grocery store are just some kinda money-making scam.
Or am I just doing it wrong?

You're doing it wrong.
You need to double down and spend 4 or 5 times as much. Your odds are much better if you spend your retirement savings.

The one thing to remember about the lottery is that your odds of winning don't statistically change by buying a ticket.

The cruelest tax ever imposed was the lottery, rich men would only buy a ticket as a joke. The poor and working poor (a new class thanks to trickle down and globalization) see the lottery a the only chance that they have, so instead of buying milk, clothes or just saving many spend what little money they might have on those damned tickets.
The mob used to run numbers, now our government does what it arrested criminals for doing. What a disgrace.

if you don't win the first 3-4 times, don't keep playing it.
i don't understand. isn't it kind of negative reinforcement? if i dish out money for nothing i'm gonna feel disappointed, and i don't go back to doing it.
