Thanks, Londoner. A very interesting technique to know. I have not, however, carried a chainsaw along on even my most thoroughly equipped outings. I suppose you could use a bow saw and a good bit of elbow grease.

I have, by the way, a teakettle almost exactly like the one pictured. It is a gem for backpacking!

They sell these, pre-made, in the supermarket.

In most places I've camped you are not allowed to cut any wood that isn't already on the ground. They sell it to you, cut already. Also you cannot bring cut wood across some state borders to prevent the spread of wood-dwelling parasites.

Actually, I carried a stove when I was backpacking. Though a fire has charms, indeed.
