Heart or Eric Clapton or Marvin Gaye or .....

Beyoncé, Jay Z, and Kanye are very influential and I think they will be remembered as such. Beyoncé is a great singer and performer and there's a long history of that in music. But it's hard to compare rappers with rock musicians, it's a different thing being created. But they speak to people and inspire and give a voice to others just like the musicians you listed did. They also certainly address the social issues of this generation too, it's not just fluff.

To be fair..I don't listen to any of it and I am completely unfamiliar with all of them except Beyonce (can't stand her)...too much marketing and image thrown in my face....

My joke is....I love Joni Mitchell...beautiful and talented Canadian singer songwriter...and I don't know a damn thing about her except she was sick in a hotel and missed Woodstock because of it....

Of course.,..she didnt' hire a PR firm to keep her in the press like they do today...

....I liked it when the music and the artists were authentic...not overly produced and marketed with phony images,....it makes me kinda angry actually....

It all started with Britney Spears for me...UGH.....little talent..shoved down our throats on the nightly news...

Still..I wonder how much of an influence they will have in 30 or 40 years...time will tell...

I like those three I guess that's why I jumped in. Most the music I listen to is really old school though so I know what you mean about it being so visually heavy and over produced in comparison. I have to wonder though if that's not just the evolution of music today. Like if you were to strip all that from Kanye and Jay Z I still feel they'd be legit and saying valuable things in smart ways. It's not the production that makes them, but especially for Kanye, it is a big aspect of his music.

Beyoncé I mean, I love her voice but if she's not your taste, I get it. I actually fell in love with her after seeing her play Etta James (an absolute favorite of mine) in the film Empire Records.I don't think she's the best voice of the generation, but I still love her.

Lauryn Hill and Nas are hip hop artists I think that will still be considered great in the future. I think there's a lot of other great artists today producing music too, like Bruno Mars and John Legend. I don't really listen to rock or country so I can't speak on those genres, but I certainly don't think this generation lacks talent... But it's just not the same as what came before. There's different taste, different issues, different technology, different voices.. I mean, you wouldn't want musicians to be making the same sound as 20, 30, 40 years ago anyway.

That said, my favorites are all musicians who came well before I was born. But I still find it exciting to be into a musician who is still creating something, who still might have their best work ahead of them.

Interesting observations...

There are so many female R&B singers I love...probably the newest one would be Mary J Blige LOL.....but Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, Diana Ross, Patti Austin, Rachelle Ferrell, Dinah Washington, Valerie Simpson, Patrice Rushen, Stephanie Mills, Anita Baker, Sade, Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill, Bettye LaVette, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Oleta Adams, Brenda Russell, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughn, Janet Jackson....lots more....

But the ones I can't stand...Donna Summer, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Beyoncé....they all have /had this fake thing about them...I often wonder if their souls just left their bodies and they are just a shell....

I do like a lot of messages from rappers...these two songs would be in my top 50 all time favorites....I think they are both masterpieces.....

Coolio...20 year old now!

...and Neneh Cherry...one of the best songs addressing AIDS....almost 25 years ago

My problem with the new ones...whatever message they have gets lost in the image they market....and I can't get past it....

Oh man, Mary J is so amazing. I grew up to her, I love her, and very real, very raw for sure. See I love Donna Summer (along with basically everyone else you listed above). Love To Love You Baby is my song. But we have different perspectives on it all I guess. But I really like your tastes from what you've listed.
