Partially, yes, but there's more to it than that.
I'm a gargoyle who would generally rather read a book than watch a movie. And would rather read erotica than watch porn. Not that I object to movies or porn, or never watch them. But they have some inherent problems. They're extremely heavily literal and linear. What you see is what you get, and they move forward at the rate that they move forward. You can hit the pause button, of course, but it can get clumsy.
The written word engages a different part of my brain. The words force my brain to get creative. My brain is forced to paint the picture, to fill in the gaps, to decide what direction to go. Quite often, my brain will leap off from what I'm reading into a completely different direction.
And I can follow that direction. If I'm watching a movie, even if it does ignite my creativity, I have trouble following it anywhere - the movie is busy pushing the plot forward, showing me what happens next. With the written word, it's a lot easier to just stop and let my brain take me somewhere new.
Internet sex is the same sort of thing. The words ignite not just my genitals but my creativity. Both in how I read what was written to me, but in what I decide to write back. It's definitely not for everybody, but I really enjoy it with the right kind of guy.
