Trump or Hillary as President, who else is petrified?
artyboy Wrote:Hmmm Italy comes to mind and France, the EU lol. Eh they have similar government system than the USA.

France mostly. But governance itself is still a bit different.

The aspect that interests us, elections, is still not comparable. France elects its president by popular vote, with a run off when there is no majority. That has no relation with the US Electoral College system, in which all the votes that Stein got, for instance, might have as well not existed at all and if Clinton got almost half the votes of Florida, it didn't matter cause the whole state went to Trump by the rules of the game in place.

The French electoral system works just like ours (well, ours like the French is more like it) . But here the myriad of parties usually form coalitions, one center-left and one center-right and give one presidential candidate each, with one or more independents usually carrying 20% of the votes.

This pseudo-biparty system would look a lot like the one in US. And that is my point here. Even if there were many more parties in US, tendencies for presidential systems in the Americas would still force similar leaning parties to gravitate around each other in order to secure elections as a block and not dilute votes and risk losing the elections all together.

That doesn't seem happen in Europe quite like that, maybe because for the most part proportional representation is mandated by law, or so I understand it to be.

P.S. Is axle really a steal magnolia? If there were ever a definition, I do admit I was being a condescending twat, right there and then. No ifs ands or buts about it.

Think you.

Oh I think it's ok to be emotional through the weekend at least. And I wouldn't pay much attention to the Trump supporters or sympathizers who say liberals need to shut up and move on, I mean imagine how they'd be reacting had Hillary won.

I think it's important to process it and feel the emotions and say what you want to say and then to start doing what has to be done again.

I don't know what a steel magnolia is so I can't answer that for you. But I think we are all a little heated right now, this has been a crazy election that has appealed to the fears and anxieties of all sides.

Hmmm, I don't remember riots, tears, emotional breakdowns, or any sort of similar reaction when Obama won either time... so...

Oh I beg to differ, I remember hearing people bitching and saying things along the lines of "That god damn muslim cock sucker won again"

Protest, sure go for it, still won't change things, not in this case anyway. However, setting fires and shit like that definitely will not work in your favor.

At any rate, generalizing people saying that liberals are idiots or that conservatives are racists twats is in my eyes equally absurd.

I remember how the republicans did everything they could to prevent any of Obama's plans going through. I remember years of questioning whether or not he was actually an American and a lot of speculation that he was a terrorist. I remember talk of him being an antichrist, a socialist, under the influence of an anti white pastor.

Over the course of this campaign I also remember Trump saying that if Clinton won maybe the 2nd amendment people could do something about it. The unprecedented refusal to accept the results before we even had the election, if she were to win. The accusations of the election being rigged prior to the results coming in too.

Yes people are protesting, right now in NYC. People are upset. This country is so polarized, this election was divisive, people on both sides are scared of the politics of the people on the other side, and there's a reason that politics is not considered polite conversation - people are not at their best in moments like this.

But people have the freedom to protest and the freedom to speak out against the government. So dealing with how people react is part of living in this country. And once the dust settles, hopefully this country can have some conversations about where we are at, because it really can't keep going on like this.

Hmmm... I believe I said similar reation... emotional breakdowns, and rioting... not your typical bitching when your candidate loses.

So why the protests and emotional breakdowns? I suppose your point of view says these "kids" don't know how good they have it (and yeah they don't) and need their safe spaces and blah blah blah.

Trump's campaign certainly played into people's fears on both sides...whether you're a Trump supporter or not. The media, all media, not just your "liberal" and "mainstream" media blew both campaigns out of proportions. You have every immigrant thinking they're going to get kicked out, every LGBTQ person thinking their marriage will be nullified and then receive conversion therapy brought on by VP elect Pence...

If you ask me this is everyone's fault. There's a lot to not like about Trump...and Clinton. I mean in one hand you have a lot of people who absolutely hate her and and are convinced she is a criminal and then Trump who people feel he is a racist bigoted xenophobe.. We have the mentality of "if you vote for Trump you're a racist" or "if you vote for Clinton you're a terrorist and WWIII will breakout." Thing is neither is accurate and we can sit behind our computers and call each other idiots because "we" somehow have a superior understanding of politics and everything we read and hear on the internet is true, so surely Trump is going to put us in a FEMA camp...

Now Trump in the 60 minutes interview he states that he is fine with same sex marriage and has no problems with the supreme court ruling. His rhetoric and demeanor have definitely toned down post campaign. Still don't know what a Trump presidency will actually bring...but I'd keep my eyes on Pence if you're concerned with LGBTQ rights and other issues that will "roll the country back 50 years in social progress." Personally the reason that Trump can't or won't come about saying he supports gay marriage, well he is in the republican party...most of which are against anything that goes against the "good book"

At any rate I'll be happy when all the dust settles on the topic.
