Radio station
#21
Well as long as my little Tyan server doesn't wig out like it did 30 minutes ago I plan on listening to my own station...

I really have been wanting to sit down and get an automation program instead so I can have more control over what is played, station ID....that sort of thing. I once played with open source automation software and was totally lost lol.

I don't think I would make all that good of a DJ in reality, I say "um" too much and get words mixed up. Then again I suppose it takes practice. The other looming problem is the damn lag, I have to yank the headphones off before I speak because it is just...trippy.

I guess the only way I can see dealing with it is getting a proper mixer board but yeah that isn't happening. So for now the only thing I can think of doing is pre-recording things... I have to run a microphone through a compressor and some EQ so it has some punch and crispness to it. I like it to sound good if at all possible. It is a trick to get it all right when you don't have all the good stuff...

If all goes well I may be launching a broadcast LPFM station out of my garage this fall. We have had a few set-backs (to the tune of $8,000 in unexpected expenses) but we still forge forward. I am waiting for my music guy to tweak the music mix.

Is a "pirate" station sort of speak?

I have a little 5 watt transmitter I toy around with. Nothing I leave on or anything. You can actually get pretty good range with not a lot of power if you're in a good spot. Me, I'm in a mountainous area so the range is very small, 2-5 miles... Height is king, you can run 10 watts in a good spot and get better coverage than running 100 in a bad spot.

I dont listen to the radio - but I do listen to a lot of podcasts. I was just listening to This American Life and earlier today I was listening to Our National Conversation About Conversations About Race. The United States of Anxiety and Code Switch are good ones too. I could keep going, but I'll stop there.

Well the problem I see with a lot of radio stations is that they're all owned by the same companies, so you get the same crap just about anywhere. There are less and less independently owned radio stations who play music they want to play air their own content, etc.

Nope, ours is 100% legal. 100 watts licensed by the F.C.C.
