What is the practical use of it? Or am I asking the wrong question?

A lot of uses for the art.
Also I think another practical use (the first that comes to my mind) is for telescopes and similar instruments to see the universe. A telescope is black inside his duct, so if is 99,9....% black there's more contrast and possibility to spot new stars etc.
I think they can use the same characteristic in microscopes etc.
