My first trip into town on the bus by myself was when I was eight. After that I often went in to buy my Superman comics or go to the cinema. At twelve I was travelling in and out of London regularly (I went to nearly all the free concerts in Hyde Park) and at thirteen my ambition was to travel from our home in North Hertfordhire to every part of the London Transport and London Country Bus transport system. It was a big area. I just used to make some sandwiches and buy a "rover" ticket for the day. My mum was convalescing in Bexhill-on-Sea once, so I told my dad I was going to visit her. He just made sure I knew about which trains to change between and getting from King's Cross to Victoria (a journey I'd already made several times anyway). I couldn't understand the fuss all the other people in the convalesent home made of me making a journey like that. Easy if you can read a map and a timetable.
