The DC law has to be approved by the US congress before being allowed to be law. Oh excuse me, I am one of the elders that just get in the way, I just help fund Lambda Legal who fights for us, I also support the Human Rights Campaign for equality, ACLU who also fights for our rights, and the gsa's on the campuses in my area. But if you like I will just get out of the way, jim

Any law that the mayor and concil approve in DC have to be approved by congress as it is where the head of our country not just another city. Although Congress does have final say on all laws passed in the District of Columbia, if Congress doesn't act on the law within 30 days it automatically becomes law. With health care reform, the war in Afghanistan, Financial Regulation reform, and soaring unemployment on their plate, it is unlikely that congress will find the time to review the D.C. marriage law, which is the case with most laws passed in D.C.
•
So, my partner and I will be able to get married, but we won't have any rights bestowed upon us, because the federal government still refuses to grant them. Marriage equality in the District of Columbia is an empty gesture, unless congress backs it, and makes it the law of the land.
We really need to fight to have DOMA repealed.

Agreed boxer, it has been a slow process but much headway has been made in the last 40 years, I also apologise to everyone as we must stick together to win this, and if we fight among ourselves or alienate anyone we have less fighting for what we all want, Jim

James, You do not have to apologise, all comments are welcomed.
Sadly only 9 Americans have joined this debate, and 7 non Americans have made comments. With nearly 3,000 members and increasing every day, I would have expected more imput from across the pond.
This debate is about your country and its future regarding better gay rights, are you all scared to voice an opinion. Over 1700 have viewed this thread, so there is an interest in the debate, Please share your views with us and be part of a great forum.
