Fred, I live on the Costa del Sol. Prostitution is legal here and is openly publicised and a lot of women from poorer countries are brought here with the promise of work and money. Drugs are freely available here too, if not legal. The women often end up working as prostitutes, and doing porn because they are addicted to drugs, frightened of the Russian mafia etc. That is exploitation, it's virtually slavery in some cases actually. Many of the brothels are in the middle of the countryside next to a motorway exit, i.e the women are trapped there: there's nowhere for them to got to. The rent boys tend to work from home in the towns along the coast and don't suffer from exploitation by pimps. You can tell from a mile off that the women are faking it in most straight porn: I just think if a man has an erection, he's almost certainly enjoying himself. My comments were the opposite of sexist, surely. I am against the abuse of women.

Short definition: Sexism is both discrimination based on gender and the attitudes, stereotypes, and the cultural elements that promote this discrimination. Given the historical and continued imbalance of power, where men as a class are privileged over women as a class (see male privilege), an important, but often overlooked, part of the term is that sexism is prejudice plus power. Thus feminists reject the notion that women can be sexist towards men because women lack the institutional power that men have. (not my definition)

What sort of work were these women promised? I don't doubt that even those who don't have sell their bodies are not doing the sort of jobs they were promised. That is simple fraud. Plenty of trafficked men are similarly defrauded, admittedly they, generally, don't end up selling their bodies.

Out of curiosity are there gay brothels with pimps, etc? Are they rent boys native Spaniards or recent immigrants? Are the rent boys not exploited because no-one is really trying/able to?

I try to avoid straight porn, most off-putting. However from what I read, just because a woman doesn't reach an actual orgasm doesn't necessarily she doesn't enjoy it.

Just because he is physically enjoying the sex doesn't mean he is happy about having the whole world watch him do it, he may have a drug habit to feed and it's 'easy money'. In which case what is the difference between his 'exploitation' and a woman's?

The implication of what you say is that either the abuse of men does not occur or that it doesn't matter as much as the abuse of women. Yes, overall women are more often the subject of 'exploitation' than men are. My point is though that it is a bit sexist to assume that a woman doing straight porn is being exploited but a man doing gay porn is not, unless you genuinely believe that an exploited man is physically unable to maintain an erection.

P.S. Just for interest, prostitution per se is not, and never has been, illegal in England. Brothels, etc. yes but not the act of paying for, or being paid for sex.

Wow, I didn't know Spain was like that. I only went there one time (just to Madrid and Barcelona) and I wish I was there now because I'm so sick of this country. But that's tererible what's happening, there and other places and right in everyone else's back yard.

I don't like the gross porn. I never knew it was there till i clicked on a link and saw one guy peeing on another that was pretty gross.

But i think a lot do it for drugs/addiction which is really sad .

Hi Fred, The straight brothels are quite widespread and blatant. There are also lot of very blatant adverts in the press placed by prostitutes, male and female. But I believe that East European women are strongly represented in the brothels. The prostitutes are of all nationalities You don't see brothels with rent boys in the same way as you see the straight brothels but of course the boys probably hang around some of the gay bars too. I don't like the gay scene here as much as I like it in the UK. Here it seems to exist solely for sex in many cases. In the UK gay men go out for a drink with friends and the sex is just a part of it. Here you get lots of married men in the gay bars who just want sex, so the atmosphere can be pretty predatory. In some tourist areas here there are bars with a more international clientele and the atmosphere is better there.

I've been watching porn for a longgggggg time since i was 14 or so and the benefit is you're having safe sex.
But on the other hand depending on what type of porn you watch it can be dehuminizing.

That part of your message made me think that since they now issue warnings about safer sex when a video or porn describes / shows bareback acts of penetration, maybe there ought to be similar warnings before acts that show acts that are a bit or very extreme, such as those you mentioned. They could at least warn that the acts depicted are some that some people might enjoy whilst others might not, and that no one should be subjected to an act (be it sexual or not) that they have not consented to (because then it would be like RAPE).

I think there is a difference between gay porn and straight porn. From most of the straight stuff I have seen, the sex always seems forced and it almost never looks like both participants are enjoying themselves. But in the gay porn I've watched, most of the time the guys are smiling and having a grand ol' time. I stay away from the weird fetish and amature stuff, so I don't want to get into that whole thing. In general I find that the sex in gay porn is more sensual and more gentle than I see in straight stuff, but maybe I haven't watched enough of it to really know.

There can be some pretty rough stuff... but then again it's like acting for the mainstream films. Some of it is badly done and some of it is well done, you wouldn't know if the person is being brutalised or not. There are different schools of porn and different settings. It also depends on what your fetishes or fantasies are, and I'm sure there's a porn site that caters to every type of fetish and fantasy. I like to watch porn sometimes just to be an observer (well, we're all voyeurs in that department) of how strangely we can act sometimes, or how bizarre people's fantasies can be. Are they really doing that in the open air, where they might even be caught???? How are they managing to film that angle?
You can also measure the different periods that porn has been through by looking at the lighting, the makeup (or not) and the artefacts used, the social context and setting too. Films of the seventies look so experimental when compared to those they make now, they are almost a pain to watch with their poor lighting, but they were more done al fresco... Today porn may have lost some of its poetry but it still works as a stimulant. The good thing is, with modern machinery and programmes, you don't have to watch through the whole thing just to get to the part that gets you off, some of it is just so damn repetitive.
