Good thread Rychard... I don't know if I'd come across it yet (but then I was away from the boards for almost three weeks). I've been listening to quite a few pieces of lovely classical music today... I can't but recommend the offerings of this French site... where there is at least one piece they offer for you to listen to free in all their new offerings. Enough to decide whether you like the sound of the CD or not. You can also go to Qobuz to download in Lossless, and for cheaper, the items you want.

For example has anyone heard of this composer? Asger Hamerik?

<<It would be interesting to find what classical composer appeals to all ages.

Since some of us enjoy many different composers. so please post as many as you like.>>

I think age may be part of what decides ones tastes in music, but I think how long and how frequently one listens to classical music would also change people's tastes. I fell in love with classical music when I was eight and am still an avid listener; though, I also listen to other genera of music as well.

I never cared much for Motzart, personally. I've always personally found him to be a bit shallow and repedative. I like Bach but prefer his contatas, the cello suites, or music for solo violin like the chaconne from partita.

Lately, I've been listening to minimalist pieces, like those from Phillip Glass' opera trilogy and John Adams' "Shaker Loops". But my favorite . . . I suppose I would have to go with the "Agnus Dei" by Samuel Barber. I'm not religious, but one doesn't have to be.

Assuming they chose to write for it, I wonder how much the considerations of today's market-driven arts world would have made a difference?

I'm not sure, but it sounds as if you think that there are no living composers of the genus. I can't claim to be familiar with all of them or even like all of them, but there is new classical music coming out all the time. Some of it does have electric guitar in it. I mentioned two contemporary composers in my previous post.

It does depend on what age you are exposed to Classical music, many young people do enjoy listening to classical music. Alas, peer pressure and the control of the musical radio stations by the record industry has narrowed the choice of music young people hear. Many radio stations will play the same song several times a day, this gets very boring but nobody seems to complain. I tend to listen to my library of music stored on my PC or listen to new and different artists on Youtube, a great way for finding new music. The net has increase my awareness of different music, one Danish radio station online which I listen to only have a plug for the station once a hour and no adverts or DJs spoiling the music with their chatter. And playing music 24/7, with several stations for different types of music.
