The performance is obviously as important as the work itself. I saw La Boheme in Berlin last winter with my bf and the tenor who played Rodolfo was fantastic and a gorgeous man too. As with most opera the plot creaks and the music borders on kitsch but when it's really well done you forget all that and fall in love with the whole experience. Incidentally if you want to sample some first class classical music, Berlin is the place to go. It doesn't get any better than in Berlin and it's a really cheap place to stay if you search out the bargains.

Berlin has a great reputation for artistic endeavour. I look forward to going there one day. A bass-player/songwriter friend of mine lives there with his opera-singer wife and certainly rates it higher than Hitchin, where he used to live Wink

Again, I've not been there yet, but Prague also comes highly recommended for a relatively inexpensive musical experience.

I believe Prague is a very attractive town too but I think accommodation in Berlin and flights to Berlin are cheaper, especially if you go in the winter and book well in advance.

In spite of the hype I like the music of George Benjamin. I hope he has a happy fiftieth birthday tomorrow. PA and I saw a brilliant young orchestra perform this piece last year. This is the first movement.
