Masturbation, it does a body good.

What exactly do you consider morality to be? Morality is about good and bad. Bad is anything that inflicts any type of pain on another creature. Good is the opposite. Evil and sin are personal things (i.e. pertaining to one or more persons) which historically have condemned people to hell, death, torture, exile, excommunication etc.

Not all religions have an issue with masturbation. OK

all acts of love and pleasure are my worship.
So how do you feel about Schadenfreude, the pleasure felt by someone who takes pleasure in another person's pain?

You've had Christianity rammed down your throat for more than 2000 years, perhaps. Again, don't generalize. I'm not THAT old. It's WE who have had Christianity rammed down our throats for more than 2000 years.

I am quite happy to be called an atheist, which I would agree is a neutral term. Having said that it is of course as hard to disprove the existence of god as it is to prove it. So, if you want to be nit-picking I'm agnostic.

Intellectually speaking, I'm not a fan of it. After all, it tends to ignore some of the other values I hold to.

On an emotional level, however, I will admit that I've engaged in it on occasion, particularly in cases where I felt the discomfort the person was feeling had a sense of irony or karma about it.

I'm not that nit-picky. I tend to like the definition of atheism (I believe Madeleine Murry O'Hare first offered it) that says that it's the state of being free of theistic thinking/belief. As such, I don't think you need to be able to prove that God doesn't exist in order to be an atheist. I consider "I see no compelling reason to believe" as equally acceptable. Rolleyes

Anyway, I do apologize for hijacking this thread. In reality, I'm sure most, if not all, of us find masturbation a much more enjoyable and worthwhile topic. Wink

Just to get back on topic:
So the question is how do you feel about masturbating? Good. It's an entirely positive experience.
If you do it (and you know you do Wink2 ) how often do you do it? Mind your own business. It varies a lot anyway, depending on my circumstances.
Do you notice any of the things described above? (i.e. reduced stress, aid in sleep, etc...). Definitely. It's the best cure for insomnia, loneliness or boredom.
Do you ever feel guilt about masturbating? (A recent study shows that 45% of Americans feel some guilt after masturbating.) No. I used to in my childhood but not now.
Overall this is an open forum about masturbation and your experiences.

JarredH Wrote:This is a false dichotomy. It is possible to accept personal responsibility for one's actions and attitudes and still follow a particular faith. But that's neither here nor their.

In order to meaningfully 'take responsibilitiy' for one's own actions and attitudes, one most first have a basic set of moral beliefs. Such basic moral beliefs cannot be logically justified. I believe that, other things being equal, increasing human happiness is a good thing, excluding circular arguments I cannot give any logical justification. All that logic can do is find any inconsistency or contradiction between moral beliefs.

It is untimatley meaningless to state that it is right or wrong to adopt the same basic moral beliefs as one's parents, are set out in book or that one have decided on oneself. What is clearly wrong is not to scrutinise those basic beliefs for inconistencies and contradictions, because if one finds them at least one of one's beliefs must be wrong (logically and morally). It is also wrong not to scrutinise all of ones other moral beliefs to check they are consistent with ones basic moral beliefs.

Since our basic moral beliefs are how we decide upon right and wrong, we must inevitably believe that our own beliefs are right and that those of any that disagree must be wrong.

I hope that makes sense

[COLOR="Navy"]I did not mean for this to become a religious discussion. When I mentioned the view of the Catholic Church I was simply giving some context to the feelings of guilt some people feel about masturbation. This is not a religious debate, it is a discussion about the positive effects of masturbation and a place to discuss our experiences.

This post was meant to bring us together with our common experience of masturbation, since pretty much every male on the planet has done it at least once.

So if we could keep this discussion focused on the topic that'd be great Smile Next week I will do a question about religion and then you guys can have at it.
