Only if they are cheap ear phones. If you buy a good quality set (and I'm not talking going out and spending £250 on a set of Bose) then the external sound isn't noticable.

Yes, I do understand a little about this stuff, but not many people are very discriminating in their choice of earphones, unfortunately.
