Just got a message from marsh that they are stuck in NYC (lucky fucks!!!) due to the flight cancellations/volcanic cloud.

They are with a group of students so it is quite an adventure for them all.

Lets all hope that they arrive safe and SOON as it must be costly to be there for an unknown time.

marsh asks to say "HEY" to all and will get to messages/PMs when they dont have to pay for computer time.

Bighug to them both

Thanks for your good wishes everyone, but I'm not sure some of you have the same perception of being stuck in a place you didn't expect with 23 teenagers who are becoming increasingly concerned to go home, have important school assignments they were expecting to be able to complete this week and a pot of money that ran out when we were expecting to fly back to Geneva on Sunday.

New York is, of course, an interesting place, but everything here costs money and practically everyone hustles you for money under the oddest of circumstances. I've missed my flight back to England and had to pay to rearrange it to a time when I know I can use it. This means that after we deliver the kids to their families in France I shall have to book another flight from scratch, which as any EasyJet user knows, means paying a premium at short notice. I've lost a few days work, which (being self-employed) means no money and the days are incredibly long, starting with a call from the travel company telling us we can't fly that day, through the chaos of meal arrangements to the hours of walking to keep everyone busy and now I've run out of clothes so I'll have to find a washing machine in this hostel. It'll be another late night I think.

Despite it all it has been a fascinating experience and the two saving graces are that the kids are great company and some have made tremendous progress in English and I am here with PA. It would feel far worse if I knew he were here and I was across the ocean. Of course, he is not out at school and, being in a hostel, we are sharing a dorm with the four boys in the group. We are being very sensible, but it's not how I expected to spend this week!

The latest news we have is that the tour comapany might have to split us into groups to fly us back on separate BA flights. They think that there may not be room for some of us until Monday.

Last evening I was waiting by the subway at 103rd Street for PA to arrive with another group (I had gone back to the hostel a little earlier with one girl and one of the parents who were feeling unwell) and was accosted for money by yet another hustler who thought that this white guy should owe him some money. Again he didn't seem to understand the concept that I didn't actually have any. His mood was difficult to read, but I did actually feel quite threatened. We all came back together tonight.

Sorry, no time to check my spelling as the time is running out. I have lots to tell you ... loved Central Park, but it will have to be another time. Thanks Frank for starting this thread. It's easier to write in one that has already been started than to start up a new one.

Contrary to my keyboard player's belief, we have not been able to afford time or money to frequent the jazz clubs!!!!

You have my utmost sympathy. Luckily I'm stuck with work, so work are picking up the tab, but being away longer than expected does cause logistical problems like you said. You really get fed up of phoning up and waiting in huge queues, and working out whether to launder the few clothes you had with you or buy new ones. Trying to find something to eat other than incredibly rich hotel food, or really unhealthy fast food.

Fingers crossed you get home soon.

I got a call late last night that they've managed to get me on a plane this morning. Being a lone traveller helped a lot with that!

If the plane fails, I've a ferry booked to Amsterdam, then a hire car to home.
