When I was 13/14 I ran a local youth division of friends of the earth (called earth action) - we had a long campaign with the local council to get them to introduce recycling bins. 10 years later for whatever reason they introduced them, despite having petitions etc with hundreds and hundreds of sigs on.
Sadly the motivation always seems to be financially related, now councils have financial incentives they are hot on recycling. The lesson will be learned when its too late to fix I fear

I feel it's so important to recycle as much of our waste as we can and I like to get enthusiastic about it.
My local authority provides, as well as normal household waste wheelie bins, a green bin for garden waste, a huge tough bag for plastic bottles, a sturdy box for glass or cans and a bag for newspapers. They could go further and do something with cardboard and yellow pages etc.
I'm happily proud that I only need to put my household waste bin out for collection once a month! If I can't be bothered to lug it out it's no big deal, a few bags by the back door wont hurt for another week.
I also recycle my old correspondence by shredding and turning in to Paper Machet. So useful when it comes to Hallow-e'en to make bits for costumes. For about 18 months I had a block of frozen Paper Machet in my freezer compartment constituted from piles of old letters etc. The weather was so good this summer that I was able to spread it all out on the garden table and sun-dry it. From the end of August my kitchen begins to resemble a special effects workshop. Just be careful what you put in your mouth, it may not be edible! Being brought up on a diet of Blue Peter I'm able to see what an old cola bottle or serial box can become. For example, the top halves of two Coca Cola bottles cut in the right places and super glued end to end by the neck of the bottle becomes, with some modifications, an Hour Glass for the Grim Reaper.
Many clubs and bars have competitions for the best costume, usually with cash prizes.
I can even make my recycling work for me!
(apologies for the spelling of Paper Machet, but I can't spell "papier mache" lol)

we have 4 coloured bins for the different waste here in yourkshire uk, although when mixed coloured glass is collected together the majority doesn't go into making new glass - its just used in road building so its defeating the object it they were aiming for - its prefered the diff glass is recycled in the coloured bins the council has a various recycle sites etc - thus it can be used in new glass and keep the cost down for new containers

If we were paid for our recycled waste more people would do it.
I have a Wheelie bin full to the brim with cans (Flattened!) but they're not worth much, or at least I wouldn't get much for them.

Many years ago when plastic was very young, we had glass. Milk bottles, fizzy drink bottles and beer bottles were all re-used, can we not return to using glass again. Money was offered for thr return of empty bottles, many a child made some pocket money during them days.
No because its cheapernow to make plastic ones and easlier to throw away the plastic bottles, also safer for the public we are told. Bad for the environment but good for the consumer, thats progress for you.
The UK government is looking into bring back the money back scheme for returning empty bottles again. Will it ever come back, I wonder!

Your points are valid, jobs and votes are more important then the environment.
