Ahhh...yes...I think Tracy Chapman is brilliant and beautiful...my favorite song from her is "For My Lover"....
I just remembered two of the first openly gay songs I heard back in the 70s and I still have both of the promos in my collection as I used to play them when I had dj duty...I think in alot of ways we have gone backwards (but alot of things have moved forward as well)....
Carl Bean (I Was Born This Way)
The Miracles (Aint Nobody Straight in LA)_
These both got mainstream radio play at the time...would not happen today
I update my music very often and I have a variety of taste. But for all the time, my favorites are all always: "A Whole New World" And "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"
Their rhythms and lyrics are just so happy.
Also, the gay part in me always seem this lyrics like an inspiration:
" A whole new world
A new fantastic point of view No one to tell us no
Or where to go
Or say we're only dreaming"
I like the orginal version in the movie and also the one of Nick Pietra
And Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Somewhere over the rainbow
Blue birds fly
And the dreams that you dreamed of
Dreams really do come true ooh ooooh
Jay, I'm also a huge Tracy fan. Here is the best performance of her career. It was December, 1988. This is the performance that literally made her famous. I even recorded my own version of this on guitar (not nearly as powerful.....*grins*). I discovered this video a couple months before I came out back in August '08 and it still reminds of that time.
On a less political note, Sarah Mclachlan's Building a Mystery. Learning this one on guitar now. She's simply the divine feminine to me. 'nough said.
