ok guys help me out

Andy opened up a new forum for me and I think it's beneficial

just a spot to throw questions comments whatever about computer stuff

we all got computers obviously and i work in computers and know I still have alot of questions so you must all also!

how to do this/that how to fix this/that

especially if you use Microsoft products - what a mess they are!

I'm not a Microsoft lover or hater, but I can't really say anything bad about XP. It's rock solid and has rarely let me down. That's not to say I agree with all of Microsoft's strong-hand tactics.

I've messed around with Linux a lot when I was 14 or 15. My first install was Red Hat Linux 4.2 I installed it on my laptop and I remember scouring the internet for weeks looking for configuration information for my laptop screen. After a couple of hours of manually editing the config file, it finally worked. There was nothing like seeing X load up in full resolution on a laptop.

I still dabble around with Linux here and there. I've used (K)Ubuntu (I prefer KDE). The reason I don't switch completely is because I used some specialized language software that has no equivalent in Linux. I also do development and that requires Visual Studio. I have no choice for alternatives.

my linux is extremely limited but mostly i found it cumbersome

and only a matter of time before someone figures out how to corrupt it as bad as windows

gotta say - if you throw XP out there and put on the Windows firewall you can pretty much relax .. unless you are doing stuff you shouldn't be doing

mate at college we tested windoz xp's firewall on a standard adsl connection with an usb modem and within an hour or so da machine had been infected with lots of trojans!! you really need a hardware router that can block out all the ports. windoz firewall is ok as an extra layer but not on its own!!

A lot of people say that “incompatibility” is a main issue, and although it is a problem, my hatred towards vista comes from random crashes! I've been able to bypass some incompatibility issues, but every damn time I’m on the internet, playing a game, or typing up homework, IT always &%($#@ CRASHES!

Also, it takes up a lot of memory and CPU usage Sad

Have you taken a look at the event viewer to see if there are any clues as to why it is crashing?

Do you mean the task manager? If not, no, I can't say I have...

right click on the computer icon and go to manage and then go to event viewer

take a look - you should see warnings or errors or both listed

they might help you track down the problem
