Monotheism -v- Polytheism ?
#31
Plus babe, it's not just the deliberate misinterpretation of the bible....

But so much of it was written for another epoch. What does our modern world have even remotley in common with the world of over two thousand years ago? The vast majority of the Old Testiment was writen after the Jews left Egypt. Rules written to preserve a people wandering and lost. Rules about children over eating, crop placements, certain atire, keeping their people alive while trying to rid themsleves of all the rituals that were Egypt.

Then comes the new testiment and Jesus. And the new testiment, put together 600 years after his death and pieced together and voted on by a huge committee (!!!!!) what should and should not be allowed in, dictated by the morals of that time and what the Romans were doing and the persecutions that were happening then...... all the things that were most likely voted out because of this interest group or another..

(who knows, maybe the whole Book of Homo got left on the floor that day because someone's chariot broke a wheel or some closet case had a bee in his bonnett)

Now fast forward two thousand years and several translations and additions and versions later.......and this is still what people are fighting and dying over pretending they are reading what god or Jesus said or intended word for word.

Amazes me....We don't believe half of what we read in the paper today, but we kill each other over a book written 600 years after the (supposed) author was dead by a bunch of politically manipulating, power hungry men who's entertainment of choice was watching people kill each other in an arena.....

That's just what I meant...

The original was put together to manipulate those around them. Pretty amazing people are so willing to allow it. And pretty damn clever of those who di it I guess. They took the whole polytheistic way, a way full of self expression and self control and turned it all on it's ear.

Like Karl Rove reincarnated over and over again!!!! Evil genius. Or perhaps we are more willing to follow that kind of person than someone nice?

Scary thought.

perhaps we all follow .. in a way .. just throwing it out there ...

it's easier to sit back and think that the government or some god is going to take care of us

or that we have to live up to some higher power

maybe the higher power is ourselves???

I think following is something that's inherent in a structured society ... ants and bees "follow" the Queen; humans "follow" the Law; children "follow" their Parents ...

... I agree GayComputerDude, that the concept of there being a higher power in life is largely based on the power issue - we tend to give ground to that which is more powerful than us - few are the people that take on the whole of Government, because whilst we may disagree with the occasional aspect of how it is run, by and large it does provide us with the mechanics to live our lives in comparative security and order ... which most people view as a good thing, of course ...

The biggest sticking point with the afterlife is that it is an unknown - are we all deluded ? Or are we all dead on balls accurate ? What awaits us when we die ? Only one way to find out, and I for one am not that keen on finding out too early on Confusedmile:.

... but yeah, fundamentally I agree - we do all follow something, even if it's just our hearts Wink.

I think the over riding purpose of religion is to take away the pain connected with loss. Losing someone is so heart wrenching....if we can beleive that they are "out there" somewhere lessens our grief. Plus the idea of dieing ourselves...not so scary if we are just passing through to somewhere where the music never stops and the go go boys are always dancing...

Years ago explaining things that we didn't understand by relinquishing it to a higher power is probably a close second...but I think dieing or having a loved one die was and is the main factor.

*Oops, I guess that's my idea of heaven* ;-)

I think organised religion is a way of indoctrinating people into a sheep-like mentality in many instances, as the tenets of the religion are often based on common-sense principles (e.g. "Thou shalt not steal"), but are used to alternative ends (e.g. the INCOMPREHENSIBLE wealth of the Roman Catholic Church).

That's one of the reasons why I follow my own path - I believe in the same concepts - I just believe you DON'T have to enter a particular building or pray on a particular day to be faithful to them.

To me, it would be like somebody standing at my side telling me how to walk every day, or how to breathe, y'know ?? It just comes naturally ...

I might enter into that concept of religion. I've been places in the world that were so beautiful that i thought...this is god if there is one. Although I've thought that about a few nights as well ;-)
