Are we in Britain the most ripped off nation in Western Europe? How many of us are going to have to cut back on heating our homes this winter

Heating in Britain is in fact still cheaper than in Europe (on average). A few years ago it was the rest of Europe getting ripped off compared to Britain.

That's interesting, however, we in Britain are held captive to the Energy companies, because of the confusing way they price their energy, which the average customer finds totally confusing. You can’t shop around and find a cheaper supplier which has been suggested by our inglorious Government because of the cartel on pricing that exists. So on the whole we are worse off. And for petrol, I won’t even get started on that subject...![/COLOR][/SIZE]

Yes I do think in Britain we are ripped off alot especially in the Northeast. The government doesn't give a damn about the north all they are concerned with is London and the south. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. The less well off people are taxed way more. A weekly food shop for our family is about £160 a week. For example a tube of Pringles crisps used to be £1.25 they are now £2.75 and that was in the space of 4 weeks. So yeah I think Briatain is a ripped off country.

No! My point is that despite the energy companies practices, and contrary to popular belief domestic energy is still slightly cheaper in Britain than the average for the rest of Europe.

I think you'll be almost on your own with that theory, tell that to those who will be freezing and dying this winter because they can't afford to heat their homes? When big companies get together to set the same price right across the board, and then make it almost impossible to understand their pricing polices then we can say without a doubt that we are worse off. Competition is supposed to be about giving the customer a choice not holding them to ransom. When we see big companies making disgraceful profits off the backs of the poorest in our country then I can say again without a doubt we are the worst off.

Are you claiming I am factually wrong or not? I have never denied many are struggling to heat their homes. Neither have I claimed that there is a free market.

Surely, It is the size of people's bills not the size of company profits that determine who is the worst off?

Actually no I'm not claiming that you're factually right or wrong? I don't know the situation in Western Europe to make that judgement. I'm afraid there is no free-market whatsoever when it comes to heating, and we've got a Government of Millionaires who really don't give a dam about the poorest in Britain. If you're making an indecent profit off the backs of the poor and low paid then profit is a factor and does affect the size of the bills.

So you are simply claiming that British households are worse off than they could be even if are better off than continental households. To which I would agree, but point out we should count our blessings.

I can't see there's much to count our blessing for at the moment. With unemployment going through the roof, wages being reduced in many instances, greedy energy suppliers, food at an all time high a Government that does not give a dam, nope I can't see that there's much to count our blessing for. And I doubt if many of us on low wages and the unemployed are better off than our Western continental neighbours, besides Greece maybe?
