Hokay, for
me the easiest way to look at this type of situation is that when you are at a point in your life where you have to make a choice - do I go left or right ? Which University do I attend ? Do I run that traffic light or stop ? Do I come out of the closet or not ? What cologne shall I wear ?
ALL these decisions can be represented as forks in the road. It doesn't matter how major or how minor,
a choice must be made and we must move on - otherwise we'll just stand here, and nothing will get done.
When you look at things in that light you are able to see that choices
are a necessary evil, and can be both liberating and restrictive, depending on the choices we make.
Additionally, your
choice in a given situation can be dictated by your mindset - you might ask yourself in a particular situation "what is the
right thing to do ?" and come to one conclusion, whereas asking yourself "what do I
want to do ?" brings you to another alternative ... fight or flight - that's a good example. You see a guy being pushed around at the bar by two lads ... do you step in and help him out ? Surely that's the
right thing to do ? Or do you perhaps sit and say nothing - i.e. taking the safer road ... ? See what I mean ? Depending on what standpoint you view the situation from, your response will probably vary.
Rarely are things so beautifully black-and-white in life as to be either right or wrong ... more often than not they inhabit that shade of grey area inbetween.
So my advice to you is this ... if you're having trouble making a choice or a decision, ask yourself this very simple question ... "what would seem to be the right choice for me at this particular time ?", and work from there ? OR, if you're aiming like my best friend Peter and I, and
try to work to a personal code ? Ask yourself what the right thing to do would be, and work from there.
In the case of universities and so on, it's probably down more to the issue of research - what uni offers the best course/s for your chosen subject - how far is it from your friends and family, that sorta thing ...
And remember ... it doesn't matter
what issue lies before you, if you want to gauge
other people's responses, you can always poll the wider audience by asking us !!
