Actually a very interesting question. Most cultures used either a sponge or a bit of rag, each member of the family having their own, they would wipe after ward, then wash their own rag/sponge. Romans were fancy about it, putting the sponge on a stick, and in families each would wash the sponge (or the servants would) and the sponge would be stored in jar/bowl cider vinegar, thus the first wipe was also antiseptic as well.
In poorer regions of the world the left hand was used, which was then washed. In the middle east and India the reason why you do not offer your left hand or eat with your left hand is largely due to how people keep themselves clean down yonder.
