azulai Wrote:Ok, so I wrote this between classes today. I never share my writing so I'm pretty embarrassed. I usually write dark moody crap. WTF is this even?

It's not finished, not sure what's going to happen. It's the story of a King and 3 fairies. I have no idea what they are going to do to him or who else will show up. It has a melody in my head.

ETA: sorry, I had to delete it. I'm too embarrassed.

Thank you everyone for the encouragement. So, ok I decided to re-post it.

So one day someone put this quote in my head:
And we fairies, that do run
...
From the presence of the sun,
Following darkness like a dream,

~Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night's Dream
#32, Act V, Scene 1, Ln 2230f

Anyway, it drove me crazy and one day I wrote this kind of satirical narrative poem.

We fairies of the night

Act I:
There he sits the King in his tower
Jester only play music of lute or harp, make it sour
That will make me feel my misery
My singular nature I must dwell
For it is all I see

We fairies of the night
How fun and merry are the shadows
We dance and sing to our own sweet melody
Fresh from the meadow, our arms full of flowers
How lovely are these wild blossoms
On gentle breeze we shall send
Surely his lips will curve when eyes behold

As blossoms flutter round
They swirl and fall gently to the ground
He gathers his robes tighter, curses the breeze
Rising his royal feet they strode
To the window he sees no view, no beauty in the trees

We fairies of the night
How fun and merry are the shadows
We dance and sing to our own sweet melody
Fresh from the meadow, how sad about the flowers
With finger on our lips we muse of mischief
How to wake thee from thy misery, oh King?

We giggle and we fret we whisper feverishly
To wound petals so, pay he must for the injury!
Take him on a flight, pull him from that tower!
A kick, swift as the wind, to the royal bottom?
Chide him gently, think of the hour!

We fairies of the night
How fun and merry are the shadows
We dance and sing to our own sweet melody
Fresh from the meadow, we plan we plot
Confusion to bring to the royal king
Thy beauty how to make Thee see?

Monday I had a snow day so after shoveling and playing in the snow, I worked on Act II. It was much harder to write. The odd verses follow a rhyming scheme but the chorus is a repetition thing. Yes, this would totally fail any poetry class.

Some fairy myth/background that might help:
*fairies are known for pranks such as tangling a person's hair when they sleep, stealing small items and leading travelers astray
*bells, 4 leaf clovers and bread in one's pocket ward off fairies
*iron is poison to fairies
*fairies are easily offended
*fairies are the personification of abstract concepts
*it's important for a fairy to keep his name secret from a human, because then the person could summon him

The poem now has 3 named characters, I hope you can hear their individual voices.
Elden: long-haired, green eyes, light green skin, bites; personifies happiness
Oren: tall and angelic, green eyes and pale pale green skin, gentle; personifies love
Kalen: quiet, green eyes and darker green skin, not sure yet what he's going to personify, I was thinking of kindness or freedom. IDK.

These personifications are what the king is seeking. I think. I have no idea where this is going. Thanks for reading.

Act II:
There he lay in his bed
Soft pillows cushion not comfort the royal head
Toss and turn no rest to find
Too bright the moon! Too sweet the air!
At long last elusive sleep is thine.

We three spirits of the air
From Hidden Hills do we venture
We seek and mischief make at the fall of night
Cloaked in shadow, swiftly we fly
Behold, so great a man!
On fairy dust shall he drift to Himmel Meadow

Such gentle beauty in repose.
Why Kalen, how you study from his head to his toes
Hush Oren, he must not wake!
Elden, do not tangle a royal lock!
A hand jumps back, then a trinket take.

We three spirits of the air
From Hidden Hills do we venture
We seek and mischief make at the fall of night
Cloaked in shadow, fairy dust we blow
Through the window, across the sky the King does go
And there below our home of beauty grandeur

He drops with a plop in gorse blooms
Ouch! Springing from spine leaves, nursing his wounds
His eyes round, his movements slacken
I told you not to hurt him, Kalen reproaches.
That was for the flowers he thought nothing to flatten.

You three fairies of the air!
In iron cages I’ll confine you, no more to roam
My fury and displeasure so enraged this night!
No shadow will hide thee from my might!
Laughing and dancing in delight the fairies fall all around
The King in his nightwear so formidable a sight!

Thank you, Mike! I appreciate your feedback. I have to agree, the first one is special to me. I think we are both seeing the difference of something that just happened in my head (first one) and the one where I obsessed too much over details/plot. haha But, I did need Act II to move the story along.

Ok, well I had to do a little editing:
Act I the last line had to change since the fairy mission changed
Act II, I didn't like the second verse or the rhyme of the 21st.

So, the tempo was starting to aggravate me. Therefore, I changed it.
Act III - adagio and the heart of the story.
And Act IV ends it, it tries to tie the tempo of the first and second acts with the third.

I had to finish this and well, move on. Scatter

Act III:
He watched the three dance with their radiant inner glow
Stop your laughter and your idiotic show
Return me to my castle, my patience is growing thin
You have no power here, O King
A sleight of hand and he was dressed in peasant finery
Eyes narrowed, his displeasure known, where might I be?
No bells to ring, no you cannot flee
Eye to eye with Oren he stood, I thought you would be smaller
Maybe it is you we did compress, your royal highness
The King turned away examined his hands in horror

Silence you giggling fools! Your names I demand
A fire Oren did make out of thin air
The fairies settle around. You know well we’d never be so foolish
As to give power over our being, to summon at your wish
What do you want? Jewels? Gold? Silver?
We want nothing from thee, came Kalen’s whisper
I request again, return me to my tower
Elden stood and around him did nip and hover
Back off! He turned abruptly, what prompted this abduction?
Well, there were the blossoms you so carelessly did trample
So easy to offend! You who threw petals on my floor!
Elden put an arm around the shoulders of the King.
We thought you could use our company.
Do not be so familiar. Pushed him off, your fellowship I do not desire
Return me to my tower

Oren rose.
Home you want?
It is home you seek?
This game grows weary, so it shall be.
You are free.
The three fairies settled around their fire.
Thank you, the King inclined his head. A direction I do require.
Each pointed finger gave a different trajectory.
Then they giggled with glee.
Slowly the King settled to the ground
The fairies had won this round.

Smiling and humming, Kalen jumped to his feet
Bowing, he offered fairy bread so sweet
I am glad you decided to stay
Come, this is a lovely tree under which to lay
The King rested upon the ground, moonlight filtered through the leaves
He noticed a web of intricate weave
Then to his dismay, his eyes did focus, a tiny fairy was caught
He told of her plight, but they insisted they saw naught
But, she’s so small, surely you care!
Fly up there!
The three fairies sat around the fire. Maybe it’s her fate, her destiny.
Outraged the King rose to his feet and climbed the tree.
Kalen, no! whispered Oren, his hand calmly kept the fairy down when he would have flown.
His fears he must face alone.

Steadily he rose through the branches to the spiral trap.
Finally reaching the tiny green spirit indeed caught in the web, wings entrap.
Troubled eyes met his filled with Sadness. There isn’t much time, came her whisper.
The King looked above his head to see a giant spider eat the last of a moth
Frantically he tried to free her wings, the web was tougher than he thought,
he eyed the monster’s steady approach.
He ripped a branch and finally made a tear
slipped her wings free with care.
one wing wrecked
he placed her inside his shirt she clung to his strong neck
The spider gaining quickly they climb down, his hand slipped and they fell the last few feet to the ground
He opened his eyes to three fairies standing around
Gently he placed the delicate spirit in Kalen’s outstretched hands. Is she ok?
Yes, he smiled and healed her wing without delay.
She bowed her head in thanks, then turned to the King
Thank you, kind sir
I am much in your debt
You have my gratitude
And, I will not forget

The King smiled and bowed, you are very welcome, fair lady. And off she flew.
Think that you should rest, the King’s scratches Kalen healed.
I would rather continue to my home, he appealed.
If you so wish, he inclined his head.
No, games? No games, Kalen said.
We will fly together, Oren instructed.
Take my hand, fly with me into the air
The King put his hand in Kalen’s just as Elden blew fairy dust everywhere
The King felt himself smiling, and then screaming
as Elden blew them into a summersault
Oren, quick as a thunderbolt
Calmed the air

The four paused as a swarm of small sprites flew out of a tree
And decided to follow out of curiosity
Down below, an old fairy pulled a cart filled with ashes
His wings worn and full of gashes
Suddenly the sprites decided to attack relentlessly
the old fairy crouched and screamed in agony, such Despair
Without thinking the king let go of Kalen’s hand
On fairy dust he glided to the ground
Grabbing tree branches he swatted the stinging spirits away from the old fairy
The fairies blew the remaining sprites out of the meadow.
The King helped the old fairy rise, faded green eyes still had a twinkle
Thank you, kind sir
I am much in your debt
You have my gratitude
I shall never forget

The king bowed. You are welcome, sir.
The King and the fairies righted the old cart
then stood there and watched him slowly depart.
It was there in the distance the King saw his castle
His heart quickened, yet a wave of dizziness fell him to the ground.

Act IV:
There he lay upon the ground,
the King without his crown
Kalen healed the sprite stings
Tended to scratches, cleared blood from the royal lip
The fairy’s soft hands made the King’s heart sing.

We three fairies of the night
From Himmel Meadow we bring you home
We sought mischief and to make you merry
So close to sunrise, we leave you
No! cried the king he struggled to his feet
He swayed, the fairies steadied him, yes, our mission is complete

Elden:
What is Happiness, O King?
For surely you now know
That you have set Sadness free.
You faced your fear, put yourself in danger
Twice tonight for a stranger.
May Happiness fill the recesses of your kind heart.
With a sprinkle of dust that reflected the rainbow in the moonlight
Elden bowed to the King and flew away.

Oren:
What is love, O King?
Wanting the pear tree to bloom
In winter will not make it so.
There is a cycle, there is a season
I promise you there is a reason
Surely you now know
That you have released Despair.
May love fill the recesses of your steadfast heart.
With a sprinkle of dust that reflected red in the moonlight
Oren bowed to the King and flew away.

The King and Kalen eyed each other.
Was there another?
A soft smile played on Kalen’s lips.
No, I am Compassion
I was always with thee.

I thought there was something special about you.
Always the one who cared
It was you who sent the first blossoms
There they stood palm to palm, cheek to check they press
Tears filled Kalen’s eyes
Come, I must take you home, my King
No—wait!
Two different worlds, you and I
Can never be
But,
There is no but, Kalen’s finger stilled the King’s lips
The king pressed a kiss

Kalen:
Thy noble heart is legendary
Oh, how I wish you could see
What others see
The warmth and the kindness
The beauty inside you
Your true love will see
I promise thee.
Just remember, my beloved King
Whatever fear inside
Set it free—do not let it rule thee.

Kalen flew him to the tower window
Rays on the horizon just a glimmer of golden
Once inside the King returned to his full height
Kalen on the sill, not a foot tall
Goodnight, sweet King, Kalen bowed
If you ever need me
You have only to call out to me, K—
Hush! The King pressed his finger to Kalen’s lips
I would never take your freedom from thee
Tears fell from Kalen’s eyes
The King caught them in his palm
A diamond teardrop now formed upon.
I will hold it dear.
Sleep. Kalen bowed and flew away.

The King awakened upon his royal bed.
With a start he rose, a hand went to his head.
He opened his palm still the tiny teardrop he clutched.
He raced to the window.
Upon a gentle breeze a small handful of petals arrived.
His lips curved into a smile
True love’s arrival just takes a while.

The End.
