Hmm. Actually Jeff made a few correct points. Jesus was very down on the priest class of His time, He was 'anti-establishment' for His day. Why else would the priests demand blood?
The events leading up to His execution going before two Roman Governors who both didn't want to execute the man tells us there is a lot more going on than just a 'criminal' facing right charges.
Jesus was not crucified for being messiah, he was crucified for holding the title 'King of the Jews'. This was in breach of the Roman Law that there was only one king, Caesar.
Since Jesus didn't recant, then death was the punishment.
This satisfied the priests demand for blood. And they demanded that blood because Jesus kept on pointing out their numerous flaws and how they were working contrary to The Law.
