My biggest concern was the possibility of hurting him worse later on. I liked him and cared about him, but I didn't feel the "chemistry" for a relationship. If I did compromise, then ended up finding someone else it would have hurt him more because more would have been at stake.

If you find the right one, they won't ask you to change and you won't ask them to change. You accept each other exactly as they are. An overlap in interests is good, but having identical interests could be boring. Don't give up what you love to do for someone else (I did once and I resent having done that), and don't expect them to give up what they love, but use the differences in interests as an opportunity to learn more about them and make new memories together.

BTW WRX STI's truly are a blast on a race track!
