Advice on Strange Guy

Hi Shadow,actually what led up to the slapping is that we were in the car driving back to his house and he was nervous because it started snowing so he blamed me for taking too long in the restaurant. I guess he was afraid of icy roads. Anyway when it came time to pay the toll he told me to hand him the card but he didn't realize that I handed him the change with the card and he dropped the money so after I got more change to give to him and he pulled away he punched me in the arm for being stupid,he claims. So I punched his arm lightly and he hauled off and gave me such a hard slap that part of my lip swelled. The next couple of days it was the anti gay slurs,I suspect because he was uncomfortable with homosexuality. This actually happened in the late 80s and the reason I'm asking now is because I wanted to get different opinions as to why he acted this way when i never treated him badly. It's always been a mystery to me.
