I would sack the morons who preach about equality but go back on that once certain groups asks for that equality.

I don't know about that. What would your top 5 priorities be as my new government and how will you make sure they succeed?

MY first priority would be renovating poor areas, and building bigger homes to accommodate more people, reducing costs to ensure that everyone has shelter.

My second priority would be to seek out alliances with neighboring countries and see if they would be willing to set up a projects to enhance the relationship of the people from each nation.

My third priority would be to reduce the wages of over paid politics and/or any over paid employee's being paid by the government. The wage will be a standard wage which will allow employees to live a good life. It'll promote people to take a job within the government to try and make the country a better place, instead of taking the job to gain a good wage. Any spare money from the cuts will be given to other top priorities such a research.

My fourth priority would be researching new and better ways to live. Of course I won't force anyone to take part, but I would seek for volunteers. Perhaps trying to start a civilization on the moon, or within the ocean.

My fifth priority would be to ensure that everyone is happy which will be a working process.

Of course, this is all off the top of my head. If I really thought about it I could probably think of some things which have a bigger priority

It's too bad the idealists can't really get into power because most people are out for themselves, and that's especially true when you get into the political & financial elites who determine the leadership (essentially democracy in our world is where we get to choose what color the drapes are, but we get about the same drapes otherwise regardless). Even when this isn't so overt it still takes money to rise far which means the elites still hold a lot of power and the ones who rise are likely to be elite (in the inherited than truly talented or gifted sense) themselves.

Oh, and many people don't like change. I actually believe this is why many stay with abusers if abuse is what they've known their entire life, they feel too uncomfortable without it, and that strikes me true of people who put up with oppressive governments & ideologies as well, or lifestyles that seem unsustainable when you think about it.

The corrupt are also much more inclined to play dirty, and the dirty fighting wins more often than not, including for political office. Furthermore the corrupt are also more willing to lie, and the sad truth is most people WANT to be lied to (it's why con-artists prosper so well).

And it's a rare idealist who can think things through as well as feel which means even if he were to gain power AND he's not stymied (which is extremely rare) then he's "bad at being good" if that makes sense which not only makes the reforms fail but also disillusion many who don't want to "go down that path again."

And then there are the idealists who are also cold realists...and these people tend to scare me, I tend to prefer the corrupt to the zealots. As for why, I'll leave a couple of quotes behind:

Btw, I'm NOT saying THEREFORE I prefer the corrupt, just that the idealists tend to be ineffective, and those that don't can be frightening as they become monsters to fight monsters and thus a cure worse than the disease. (Plus, I don't believe in saints, even Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. had plenty of faults though they are among the few idealists that managed to do more good than harm.)

This is sad but true. People are not used to or don't even want change and I think there is a problem right there on it's own. I think it would take a lot of time one, and a lot of influence two to get anything much less a government turned around and working in a whole different fashion.

Well I would have to say you are right and also wrong. The government is of course made up of people like you and I. The only thing about is is like Pix said, they play dirty. The people in the government have been in their positions for so long they are good at playing dirty. Which in turn makes them the scum of the earth. They have found out a way to manipulate the people of this country into relying on them for everything. "We want gay rights!" Well lets ask congress what they think and we will let you know after they have sat on it for 5 years.

What are they even doing in there? Playing patty cake? Sitting around eating lunchables and having nap time? It cant be that hard to vote on a stupid decision. Yes Yes Yes Yes No No Yes Yes No No.... More yes's than no's. Gays can have their rights. Done and done. Onto North Korea... Tell them to Fuck off yes or no...
