last name change

Geminize Wrote:Interesting... I hadn't thought about this in relation to gay marriage. I think I would prefer both partners keep their last names, unless we planned to adopt and raise a family. In that case, one last name is certainly easier than a hyphenated one for the kid(s).

On a personal note: my wife and I both changed last names when we married. She was never fond of her family name, and I reclaimed my ancestral name which had been westernized during WWII. Now that we are divorced, I'm glad our children have my name, but that's just my ego.

If you change your name, old friends will have a harder time finding you via google and fb. Your family will have their own reaction. It really comes down to how you relate to your name and your family. For myself, I wouldn't see a reason to change unless we planned to adopt.

we really haven't talked about kids but that would definitely be a good reason to do it. i was thinking it would strengthen us as a family, even with just the two of us. i like my last name but it's common, bowen. and i like my partner's name, so that's not really an issue.

i imagine, like my sisters, i'd use a "maiden" name on fb. which sound really odd now that i'm typing it, lol.

in the end, there's no rush unless we have kids, like you said.

Not sure.
My last name is generic but works.

I guess it depends on if I, or my partner wishes to take the last name of the other.

grandchildren would have a hyphenated name with 4 names and it would just multiply from there.

like bobby bowen-gatliff-smith-jones

somewhere choices are going to have to be made.

Sure. Change my last name... If you are man enough too.

I so wanted to get married way back in my first relationship, I was such a romantic dolt I sat there writing my name with his last name over and over again...

However this was back in the day that everyone knew that two men getting married as as likely as a black man as president.... Times have changed, nearly anything is possible now days.

I would change my last because it is linked to nothing but disgrace and misfortune.
