Latent Homosexuality
#1
I recalled this study too - was brought to mind by the bisexuality thread:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latent_homosexuality

Quote:

A theory that homophobia is a result of latent homosexuality was put forth in the late 20th century. A 1996 study conducted at the University of Georgia by Henry Adams, Lester Wright Jr., and Bethany Lohr[1] indicates that a number of homophobic males exhibit latent homosexuality. The research was done on 64 heterosexual men, 35 of whom exhibited homophobic traits and 29 who did not. They were assigned to groups on the basis of their scores on the Index of Homophobia (W. W. Hudson & W. A. Ricketts, 1980). The groups did not differ in aggression.[1]

Three tests were conducted using penile plethysmography. While there was no difference in response when the men were exposed to heterosexual and lesbian pornography, there was a major difference in response when the men were exposed to male homosexual pornography.

The researchers reported that 24% of the non-homophobic men showed some degree of tumescence in response to the male homosexual video, compared to 54% of the subjects who scored high on the homophobia scale. In addition, 66% of the non-homophobic group showed no significant increases in tumescence after this video, but only 20% of the homophobic men failed to display any arousal. Additionally, when the participants rated their degree of sexual arousal later, the homophobic men significantly underestimated their degree of arousal by the male homosexual video.

The results of this study indicate that individuals who score in the homophobic range and admit negative affect toward homosexuality demonstrate significant sexual arousal to male homosexual erotic stimuli.

There may be some truth to this. I know I was once homophobic, even if I "accepted" others being gay. In truth I was afraid of my own sexuality, so I acted on that fear. It took pulling my head out of my ass to finally accept who I really was. As for everyone else? They might be like I was. It's hard to say, really. Maybe they are as fruity as we are. Watermelon

I can't say if this is completely true.

One example is my uncle (who is already married). I had a discussion about gay relationships (because of another uncle who came out recently). The conclusion I had is that he has a "backward looking", and so he is completely homophobic. He can only stand gay guy type when that person is successful in terms of career. Because of this attitude, I can't really see him liking other guys. Even my aunt (his spouse) said he likes to watch lesbian videos (and I found out that was funny xD).

So, I think not all homophobic people are actually gay. There can be some cases in which are in denial and don't want to accept, but there are other cases that it is "just because it's not normal".

Hmm.. never personally trust tests that haven't been re-done in recent times. I mean, there's a reason so many old theories get disproven. I mean, why is the control group different in size to the experimental group? That hardly seems like a necessary variation, the percentages would be compromised as a result...

And speaking of the percentages... they don't even add up Laugh
54% of homophobes gained a degree of tumescence... 20% didn't... so, what? Did the remaining 26% suffer from erectile dysfunction making them ineligible to record? Laugh

I'm sure some homophobia comes from a degree of denial and self-hatred stemming from societal pressures, but I have to say I don't think it's the big root cause this test may be hinting at.

I think the biggest cause of it is the same as every other discrimination (racism, sexism, etc). I think it's just caused by our environment, and the way we're raised. If we're taught that being gay is wrong as children, we believe it. If our parents mock the gays they see on TV, we learn from that, etc, etc.

I don't think racism comes from latent sexual desires towards the race a person finds issue with, and likewise I think homophobia is - usually - just an inherent issue a person developed over time, due to their surroundings and common culture.

Of course, that's all just personal opinion. Feel free to ignore xD
