I'd recommend Hero, it has beautiful visuals, a good plot and very impressive action.

Not sure about your tastes, but Requiem for a Dream is pretty immense - don't watch if you're easily depressed though, it truly is not a good ol' happy ending kinda film

Also The Notebook's pretty amazing.
