Eating healthy and getting back in shape

As someone who once weighed 217 pounds, I'm 5'6" by the way, I can tell you from experience.

THE key to maintaining a healthy weight is looking at food in a healthy way.
You have to look at food as fuel for your body. I LOVE good food, but I cook and eat healthy. Does that mean I can't eat the things I like, no it doesn't.

I follow a few simple rules when planning meals. Try and make half of your plate fruits and vegetables, a quarter of your plate protein, and a quarter good quality carbs. By good quality carbs I mean favor complex carbohydrates over simple ones. When it comes to protein selection, eat fish and fowl more often than beef and pork. Bake, saute, sear, roast, steam, more often than frying or deep frying.

I'm not really a dessert guy, but I do have a weakness for ice cream, and the M&M ice cream cookies, love those things.

If you are a dessert guy, remember that dessert while delicious, doesn't have to be loaded with fat and sugar to be yummy, try some fruit desserts with lowfat cream, amazing how yummy they can be.

That's the food part, now for the part that most people have the problem with.

EXERCISE!!!!

You can eat nothing but steamed chicken and green beans and still get fat if your caloric intake is greater than the amount of calories that you burn. Plain and simple.

Learn about basal metabolic rate, plenty of resources on the internet for that, if you need or want to lose some weight, you have to burn more calories than you ingest.

For general fat burning cardio is the best thing, for overall fitness, you need to train both cardio and strength.

I typically run 2-3 times a week, and go to the gym 5 days a week, I do general strength training.

Trying to get my joints unlocked right now so I can start doing crossfit, but I've had a lot of injuries in the past so the mobility portion is going to take some time.

In general though, eat healthy, and exercise, and you will be healthy.
