Children's Books
#11
I just remembered, My Teacher Flunked the Planet was depressing. And The Cat Who Wished to Be a Man didn't pull many punches either. That said, I loved both books as a child. (I think I was 12 when I read Z for Zachariah from the middle school library and holy crap!)

While not a book I recall finding Return to Oz terrifying when I was 10 and had terrible nightmares over it. Though when I saw it again as an adult it was a bit too silly to be scary.

'Course there was Old Yeller from before my time, and Bridge to Terabithia (as a book)...
