The holiday.

So, as you all may or may not be aware, it's currently the 14th of February. So (at least for those of us in the Americas, I'm not sure what countries also celebrate it) that means it's Valentine's Day. The day for commercialism and making fun of single people. I mean... It's a day meant for showing a loved one that you care.

I, personally, don't enjoy the holiday. I don't enjoy it now while single, and I never enjoyed it in the past when I had a boyfriend. I feel it's too commercialized. It's... hollow. Why wait until one specific day of the year to express your feelings toward somebody? Why not do little, random things for them throughout the year? Random acts of kindness from my partner would mean a lot more to me than some chocolates/balloons/roses/cheesy pick-up lines.

What are your opinions for this holiday?

Well I guess it's not very commercialised or celebrated here. There aren't any decorations or special things, but I guess some supermarkets do discounts on chocolate boxes before it

I'm no expert on it then, but I think some people just like to have a sort of 'officially' mandated day for it. Just for recognition I guess. And it's like getting together for holidays, it's just something that you do and it's nice for some people.

But again I don't really know, Auckland doesn't really do Valentine's Day. In fact the Lantern festival which is these couple days is more important, both socially and commercially.

Couldn't agree more I mean it was fun when your in school and receive valentines cards but when your older and single it jus reminds you that you are.

Thank goodness over here it's not that much of a big deal like in the US.

But I do get those look off "awwww, he's alone" if I dare do anything during this day on my own..

my reply is a look that says "I'll rip both your throats out if you keep that up"

like most Holidays, I abhor this day. But not because I have always spent it on my own.

Everything is commericalized, manufactured, tacky, corny....vomit-inducing..

every single annoying love song gets played on the radio (not even the cool ones, I mean..jeez could you at least play "Lovesong" by The Cure....not to mention that Spanish-speaking balads are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo corny)

Yeah....not my favorite day...still not as bad as xmas, though

I like the way you think.

Personally, I made it a special day (well, a special day two days ago because I couldn't do it today) for my boyfriend because I'm constantly busy and don't have enough time to do special things with him.

But it's not the only day one can do these things, and if you're using it to make fun of single people you're doing it wrong.

If you're single, why not treat yourself to a special day? Or a friend? In highschool, my friends and I often sent each other cards/flowers.

I do enjoy valentine's day as a special day but... I don't know if this makes sense though... If I was dating a boyfriend that expected me to get him something, I would have refused to do anything and talked about how it's important to be together as a couple all days of the year, then done something depending on the success that conversation had. Does that even make sense? I hate couples who basically use the holiday to judge the health of their relationship. I made it a day for my boyfriend because I wanted too and knew it would make him happy.

... Does someone need a secret admirer to send him flowers?

I feel that it should be a day to express that you care about your significant other, I could care less about gifts and things like that. Of course, we should always show that we care, but in the world we live in, we don't always have the time to give each other attention, so I feel that Valentine's day should be an excuse to push other things aside and enjoy the company of loved ones.
