I have no idea why you are even considering this. You have already entered dangerous territory by continuing exchanges with him when you found he was under 16. Also, despite 16 being the age of consent, exchanging explicit talk or pictures with him, which many people do online, can be considered supplying a minor with pornography even when he is 16 or 17 and if you have done this already you have very likely already broken the law. Not to sound mean, but off all the people in the world, is there really no one of age that you can find to date?

OP, if you have any sense at all, you would not have further contact with him until he is of legal age. But you originally asked - 8-year age gap-Right or Wrong? Well, it is a very big age gap when the younger one is 15 or 16 or 17. A much bigger gap than if he were in his 20's. A much bigger difference in maturity level. It's not inherently wrong, but you would essentially be a father-substitute, as he would in no way be an equal to you. Is that what you are into?

I used to think it was ok till i turned 18 now i know what all the fuss is about. keeep it friends till he's of age after all you waited this long a little while longer won't hurt.
And you can get to know each other better.
