My pride theme attire ??? thoughts???
#21
My thoughts are much more aligned with Bowyn's and Uneunsae.

I am proud of myself - for what I am. Of which being gay is just one part of it.

I can't get behind the 'gay pride' bandwagon, but can totally get on board with the 'gay rights / equal rights' bandwagon. They have devolved over the years such that they don't always represent similar interests.

It is difficult to see how making a fool of oneself exhibits pride.

Confidence maybe.

Wow. When is the last time some of you attended a pride event? All these judgments and ideas that this devolved into something horrible is really out of place. I attend them every year and have done so since the 80's and to believe what some do can only be from stock news clips or photos or memories from years ago. If anything, these events have become very mainstream. Maybe people are getting these ideas from circuit parties, love parades, young people over-indulging at electronic festivals that certainly do have a lot of gay attendees, or Folsom, but none of these are pride events. When New York state passed marriage equality in 2011, it took effect right before pride weekend in New York City, one of the largest in the world and was the top story on all three evening national network news broadcasts in the U.S. that weekend and they were not showing nudity or anything explicit from the parade. They were showing people celebrating and hugging and kissing.
I attend the Palm Springs pride festival and parade and there are not men running around with their asses bare and women without tops on. If there was any place in the world, a place with nudist and sex resorts and a huge bear and leather scene, where you would think this would happen, this would be it. Instead, there is the local high school lgbt organizations marching, but it goes even beyond that, the Palm Springs High School marching band marches in the parade, glbt people with their children march, and so does Pflag. Yes there are certainly some visually unique elements here, but I haven't fought this battle for years to leave these people out or expect them to hide, because what this battle is about is that none of us should have to hide and that certainly should not be expected from other gay and lesbian people.

I'm O.K. with having pride
I'm O.K with the parade and showing and supporting your Gay pride.
IF you want the straight community to dislike GAYS even more, then by all means just wear undies and act like fools, Lets give the straight community more AMMO against us.

The straight community doesn't hate gays.
The homophobes hate you anyway, whether you come in underwear or polo with khakis.

It's pride! Celebrate that you are out, celebrate that so many of us get together to have a great time, celebrate the fabulous successes we've had in recent years in the west.

Being gay is not for Sissies.

I'm talking about Pride. In my city. It's a 3 day event that is more like a block party that takes place downtown than anything else. They hire DJs and there is just music and partying. It's like they took the gay club outside. There are "groups" there, too, mostly on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, but once evening hits, it's just "party party party". It seems like the groups that are there during the day are just a way to justify the party at night. I constantly hear over and over that "it's only worth attending at night!"

I live in the Midwest, so even the gay crowd is close minded. It seems like the only thing people do around here to celebrate anything is get wasted and make fools of themselves.

So, yeah, part of it might be where I live.

But I wouldn't touch most of these men with a 10 ft pole that had a condom on the end.

thats my belief as well LOL

Quote: I hate to be the one to point this out, but many of the LGBT people are looking at the end of day news and are wondering if perhaps we are leaving the world with the impression that LGBT is only about sex. Thankfully most of us are not militant about that little worry and have no problem with doing nothing at all to kill the stereotypes that gays are sex fiends and that homosexuality is only about sex.

Watch any news channel that covers the Gay Parade in a 'sound byte' - The bawdiest and most sexually explicit clips are shown, and the larger crowd of 'normal' people going about in normal attire and attempting to show the LGBT community in the light that hey we are people too is completely ignored.
Yep thats pretty much it...people see the news report on pride and go by that alone. The media (in most cases) ofcourse like you said picks the most extreme examples...its all for ratings: people don't want to see 'normal' because 'normal' is boring' Lol

I've been to pride festivals a few times, and the majority of people there just dress and act 'normal' . It is actually possible to go and not see a single drag-queen, or guy in just his underwear. Personally if it was all about nudity & sex I wouldn't go.

Uneunsae Wrote:Pride is just tacky. I will never step foot around it.

"Wooooo we're gay! Time to run around in our underwear and get drunk!"

No. Sorry, this is not who I am.

I think you are misrepresenting Pride, at least to yourself... That's not been my experience of Pride at all. Neither underwear, or naked, nor drunk.
