My pride theme attire ??? thoughts???

Just to be sure, you've been there, witnessed it and decided it wasn't your thing? Or ... just seen stuff on tv and decided that that was what it was like? Two different perceptions might be possible from how you witnessed this.

Furthermore, dear friend with the handle I have trouble spelling, I must say that Prides often have an organisation committee, one to which you could adhere to make suggestions for something different. You could be heading a group of like-minded people who don't like the idea of nudity or underwear in the streets and who want to present a more 'acceptable' version of the gay community, let's say a chaster, more modest segment of the community. It's the old adage of "If you can't beat them, join them!", I suppose.

okay, we are a little more unrevealing here in las cruces, however I have been to the gay pride parade in sf and you would fit in nicely. Do what your feelings tell you to, listen to yourself, not to anyone else, Jim

Instead, there is the local high school lgbt organizations marching, but it goes even beyond that, the Palm Springs High School marching band marches in the parade, glbt people with their children march, and so does Pflag. Yes there are certainly some visually unique elements here, but I haven't fought this battle for years to leave these people out or expect them to hide, because what this battle is about is that none of us should have to hide and that certainly should not be expected from other gay and lesbian people.

I was about to ask the same question. I've been in the NYC Pride March twice, and seen it multiple times. Yes, you do see some of what's been described here, however, that's all the news stations focus on, which is why you think that's all you see.

I was at the march IceBlink talked about above in 2011, and it was great! There are contingents of gay police officers and fire fighters who march, they were giving everyone high-5s, they were so psyched to be there.

The first march after the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell saw soldiers in their uniforms marching.

Health organizations march, banks march, churches march, and all of them are dressed.

A Pride March can be a great thing to see, and before you criticize it, at least go see one first.

^^This...and if parades in general aren't your thing, skip the parade and atleast go to the festival part of pride. If you don't enjoy it and/or the people in whatever city you go to truly do have bad behavior, then I can see criticizing...

YES I do agree that the media only focuses on the negative and attention grabbing scenes.
( It grabs my attention, big time) But it's not about me. YES we have come very far in our acceptance. I see the look on friends and family's faces when thy see news footage of this and then whisper negatively to each other. Then they talk about it and work the next morning.

You know, What about all the fights, assaults, robberies, that take place at the St Patties parade. The stuff you don't hear about. The media doesn't want all of this shown, it makes the town look bad. HOWEVER it's O.K. to show sexy Gays in their undies.

Pride events are a huge turn off for me, I been to two of them so far and just pisses me off, Way to many bltichy for me. I'm quite straight acting and don't really let my sexuality define me, same goes with my disability.

What I find funny about all these posts suggesting I shouldn't wear underwear is based on the perception that it gives a bad wrap on the gay community if I wear my underwear. I m sorry this just does not make sense. When I walk downtown, there are pictures of girls in bikini's and thongs for advertisements to go into clothing stores. I see girls in there bikinis walk downtown sometimes and the straight community doesnt seem to care much. What is the big deal if I wear my underwear? Pride is about celebrating who we are, and not being ashamed of it. Are you guys suggesting I cover up for uncomfortable straight men? I m sure they have no problem seeing lesbians dressed in almost nothing or straight girls who are always in their underwear in commercials advertisements, media etc...? so to those who say I am perpetuating a stereotype, creating a bad wrap for the community or whatever... I say your just part of the problem, and not the solution. How about equality and acceptance of all people? The negative reactions from my OP only makes me feel stronger that I should dress the way I want.

On a side note, people are way to conservative anyways and our bodies shouldn't be something we are ashamed of. Why cover it up ?

You have made a made a good point NayNay. We should not be ashamed of our bodies or of who we are. Not everyone will agree with your choice of attire of course, but you must do what feels right and comfortable for you. Most of all have fun on your pride day Smile
