I'm sure you'll both be great parents when the time comes! You could always look into adoption or surrogacy! I'm not sure how it works where you live, but I'm sure you'll find some info online. Smile

How are you?
My name is John and I’m from Belgium!
Me and my partner are together for already 5 years! We are ready to go further!
We would like to complete our family…we lack a child…but want to become the best daddies in the world..How do you think how can we complete our family and make it full???

Hello John

My husband and I are in the same boat and adopting in the UK. I think the Belgium law from what I understand is that gay and straight couples have the same rights which is great!!

We are still in the assessment process and it's taken 5 months already so it's a slow process as we are unlikely to go to approval panel until summer. Here in the UK they assess everything in your life including your backgrounds, relationships and finances which is sensible I suppose. They also like to see that you have done plenty of reading and research into the matter.

I guess you can start by thinking if you are wanting to adopt or to go through surrogacy. They might have stipulations like here in the UK for a time period to lapse between trying previous methods like surrogacy (or IVF in a straight couple) before they do your adoption assessment.

Our friends who have adopted say that there are plenty of hoops to jump though but the rewards are worth it!!

Good luck and keep us up to date with your progress?

All the best

CK

Thank you for your post, ck86. It is not so easy to choose between adoption and surrogacy, because each variant has its pros and cons. How did you make your choice?

that's great. do you have a preference (adoption, etc.) or do you just want children no-matter-what?

i have always wanted a family, children. but i can only see myself being a father of children while being married to a woman. i cant imagine being a gay dad, not that i have a problem with it. i know nothing is wrong with it.
i don't know if its because of my upbringing and family being anti everything gay. maybe i'm just afraid of being seen as the "mom" because i am small and most likely going to be less dominate than my mate...

We talked about it early on when we were dating so we agreed on things before we got married. Neither of us particularly felt a strong urge to have our own biological children especially when there are so many children who need a family in the care system. The second reason was down to cost and legality. In the UK there's no contract that you can sign like in the US. The costs is variable from surrogacy to surrogacy but ultimately the child is the birth mothers until she "give it up" for adoption by the gay couple. So there's a chance that she could change her mind even if she isn't biologically the mother.

Basically with both of these we decided to go with adoption but it's not without it's own problems as most children come via the child protection system so they would have suffered from abuse and trauma of some sort and there's the consequences of that too.

Hope that helps.

The main caregiver isn't usually who is smallest but what circumstances is best for the child and couple. By the sounds of things you are single at the moment? I wouldn't worry too much about what others think and focus about living out your life and then when the time is right for you and your potential partner then you can talk things through at the time.

I am also not sure how things work in Belgium. Jake's comments are real as he and his partner have an amazing daughter, don't know if it applies to Belgium, but foster care is always looking for people to raise children and can lead to adoption. Just my thoughts, James
