How do you manage to avoid encounters with someone you know that's walkign towards you and you don't wanna see?

Get my phone out and look at it, and avoid eye contact at all costs as I walk past. Normally works. If eye contact is made, I say hi and continue walking. If they still stop me, I'll exchange a couple words then say I am in a hurry.
